In Lom, archaeological heritage, sacred architecture and the location of the ancient city of Almus on the Danube come together. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether historical sites, churches and museums, or travelling by road and rail will shape your plans. Local points of interest range from early and late Roman remains to buildings dating from 1880 to 1940.

Almus and archaeological history

The ancient city of Almus lies in northern Lom on the banks of the Danube. Designated an immovable archaeological cultural heritage site of national importance, it comprises an early and a late Roman fort, an early Byzantine fortified settlement, and its associated necropolis. Several historical periods are represented side by side: Roman fortifications and a later Byzantine settlement. Visitors with a particular interest in archaeology will find these elements form a common thematic focus for a trip.

Museum and firefighting history

The Historical Museum in Lom was founded on 20 September 1925 as the local archaeological society “Almus.” Its departments are devoted to archaeology, Bulgaria from the 15th to the 19th century, modern history, ethnography and art. The permanent exhibition is arranged thematically across two floors of the museum building. This range connects archaeological subjects with later periods and different cultural-historical perspectives. As the exhibition layout may change, it is best to check the latest information before planning a specific visit.

The Lom Watchtower offers a different historical perspective. Built in 1879, it is considered the first tower of its kind in Bulgaria and houses a museum on the history of firefighting. The tower thus combines a 19th-century building with a distinct subject: the development of firefighting. Together with the Historical Museum, it provides insight into different aspects of the city’s history.

Churches and architectural history

The Cathedral Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is the largest church in Lom. Construction began in 1863, and it was completed between 1894 and 1897. It was solemnly consecrated in the summer of 1906. The church has been designated an architectural cultural monument since 1974. The dates for its construction and consecration, which are separated by several years, show that its history includes several important milestones.

The Church of St. Nikola Stari, known as Borunskata Tsarkva, is also among the city’s designated cultural monuments. It was restored in 1885 and has been designated a cultural monument since 1975. It has different historical points of reference from the cathedral: its restoration in the late 19th century and its later designation as a monument. This helps place the churches in context not only by their function, but also by their individual building and heritage histories.

Beyond individual churches, the municipality of Lom has 57 buildings designated as architectural cultural monuments. They were built between 1880 and 1940, and their designs are by Austrian, Belgian, German and Hungarian architects. The buildings feature late Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque styles. The architectural heritage therefore encompasses different styles and a period that overlaps with the churches’ construction dates, but is not limited to them.

Getting there and planning your trip

Road and rail infrastructure is described as a way to navigate the municipality. Route II-11 between Vidin, Lom and Kozloduy and the E-79 between Lom, Montana and Sofia run through the municipality. In addition, 12 kilometres of electrified railway line run through the municipal area; the station in Lom has 17 tracks. For your specific journey, check current timetables and road conditions. This will help you plan your trip around the city’s historical attractions while taking the conditions on your intended travel date into account.

A time-specific cultural event was the 18th National Amateur Theatre Festival in honour of Krastyo Pishurka. It took place in Lom in September 2025, with international participation from Italy. If you want to plan a trip around an event, check the specific dates before making arrangements. For a stay unrelated to an event, the archaeological sites, churches and museums offer different cultural points of interest.
