These topics point to different aspects of a trip: architectural history, a geographical connection, a historic road route, and a viewpoint. You can first decide which of these perspectives is most important when choosing your destination.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of St. George the Victorious stands in Karnare and was built between 1947 and 1955. Karnare is considered the only Bulgarian village that managed to build a church during this period. The construction dates provide a clear timeframe for this cultural landmark and connect it directly to the village. For travelers who take architectural and local history into account when choosing a destination, the church is a distinct point of interest alongside the attractions associated with the pass and the old road route. Unlike the Roman traces of Via Traiana, this is a church built between 1947 and 1955: two clearly distinct historical periods sit side by side.

Troyan Pass: Connection and Elevation

Troyan Pass, also known as Beklemeto, connects Karnare with Troyan. It is about 50 kilometers long and reaches 1,565 meters at its highest point. These two figures answer different orientation questions: the approximate length describes the pass as a route overall, while the elevation indicates its highest point. If you consider Karnare in connection with Troyan, the pass is a geographical link; the elevation adds a separate measure. This makes it possible to consider length and elevation separately when planning your trip.

Goraltepe Arch Monument and Viewpoint

The Goraltepe Arch Monument is about a 15-minute walk east of Beklemeto’s highest point. A narrow paved road leads to the monument from the south. The reference points differ for orientation: the approximate walking time is measured from the highest point, while the road reaches the monument from the south. From the platform, the view extends north toward the Beli Osam and Troyan valleys, and south over Sredna Gora, the Rhodope Mountains, and Rila. The directions divide the panorama into a northern view of two valleys and a southern view of several landscapes. As access conditions can change, check them before your visit.

Traces of Via Traiana

Fragments of the Roman Via Traiana have been preserved around Troyan Pass. Its route included the hilltop station of Montemno near Beklemeto; it also continued downhill in the direction of Hristo Danovo. These historical details answer a different question from the pass’s length and elevation: they locate fragments, a station, and the route’s further course. Unlike Troyan Pass, which connects Karnare and Troyan, Via Traiana refers to a Roman road route with surviving fragments. This makes it possible to distinguish the geographical connection from the historic route.
