Explore Perushtitsa through its religious buildings, its history of schools and museums, and the paths in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the destinations: the Red Church reaches far back into late antiquity and the early Middle Ages; the Danov School combines architectural history with its present-day use as a museum and gallery; hills, a fortress and hiking trails offer other highlights.

Churches, School and Museum

The Red Church, also known as the Basilica of St. Mary, is a partially preserved Christian monument from late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, near Perushtitsa. It was in use from the 4th to the 14th century and is designated a monument of national importance. A 700-metre footpath leads to the Red Church, where a visitor centre has been built. Those interested in early Christian history can explore the building’s long period of use here.

The Danov School was built in 1850 in the courtyard of the Church of St. Michael and St. Gabriel. Today, the building serves as a museum and art gallery. A hall in the basement hosts temporary and guest exhibitions by Bulgarian artists. The history of schooling and art exhibitions are thus among the different subjects to discover in Perushtitsa.

The Church of the Holy Archangels Gabriel and Michael houses a stone sarcophagus containing the remains of revolutionaries. The Perushtitsa Historical Museum offers themed tours and talks in its museum halls and at associated historical monuments. A notice dated 19 May 2026 mentions these offerings; arrange the details before your visit.

Hills, Views and Trails

The Monument of the Three Generations is 23 metres high and stands on Vlasevitsa Hill above Perushtitsa. From there, the view extends over the town, the city of Plovdiv and the Rhodope Mountains. You can reach the monument by car or on foot via an asphalt road. Peristitsa Fortress lies less than three kilometres south of Perushtitsa, on a rocky hill 668 metres high.

The megalithic sanctuary of Manastirski Skali lies about five kilometres south of Perushtitsa in the mountains. By car, head towards Skobelevo and Churen. Park near the turn-off for the monastery, then continue on foot along an unpaved road. The fortress and the sanctuary are two distinct destinations south of town, differing in their location and character.

Perushtitsa is considered a starting point for hikes in the Chernatishki section of the western Rhodope Mountains. In addition, eco-trails connect some of the cultural heritage sites and offer views of the historic and natural landscape. Trail conditions and signage may change; check both before setting out. This keeps hiking plans and visits to individual cultural heritage sites recognisable as distinct options, without assuming the same conditions for every trail.

Wine and Tastings

Vinograd Wine Cellar in Perushtitsa offers guided winery tours and wine tastings by prior request. The winery produces red, white and rosé wines. If you are planning a tour or tasting, arrange your request and the details before your visit; conditions for such requests may change.
