Boykovo brings together historic religious sites, a museum, viewpoints and recurring village festivals. When looking for a hotel in Boykovo, these highlights can help structure your trip planning: they show whether you would rather set aside time for local history, the landscape or a particular festival. The attractions vary considerably in character, so you can shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most.

Churches and Local History

The Church of St. Athanasius was built between 1835 and 1838 and stands at one of the highest points in Boykovo. It is considered one of the earliest churches in the Tamrash Nahiya and is protected as an immovable cultural heritage site.

There are 13 chapels in the territory of Boykovo, located at older sacred sites. Their dedications include St. Elias, St. Nicholas, St. George, St. Peter, St. Michael and the Virgin Mary.

On the central square, the Zdravets community centre houses a museum about the history of the settlement, as well as traditional everyday life and culture. It complements the religious sites with subjects relating to daily life and local culture.

Landscape and Archaeological Interpretations

Mărtvite Skali is a rocky viewpoint about 200–300 metres from the summit of Kriv Kamak, offering a panorama over Boykovo.

Linăt lies at an altitude of about 1,350 metres. It is considered an important archaeological monument and interpreted as a sacrificial sanctuary. The Plovdiv Archaeological Museum offers an alternative interpretation.

The 60-decare pine forest planted in the territory of Boykovo forms Park Zdrave.

Festivals and Getting There

The annual village gathering with live music on 15 August is accompanied by a religious celebration in honour of the Virgin Mary. A Kukeri gathering is also held during Mesni Zagovezni. The specific events may vary from year to year, so check the dates and programme when planning your trip.

Boykovo is 5–6 km from the paved, two-lane third-class road from Plovdiv to Lilkovo. Buses run from Plovdiv’s Rodopi bus station. A bus stop in Boykovo’s villa area is about 3 km from the settlement. Check the connection before travelling, as bus services and timetables may change.

Municipality of Rhodopi: Wider Context

The Municipality of Rhodopi lies south to southwest of Plovdiv, at the foot of the northern slopes of the Rhodope Mountains, and covers about 300 km². Its events calendar may also be useful for planning a trip: the annual municipal festival, held between 1 and 10 June, rotates between settlements, lasts two or three days and features performances by more than 35 amateur ensembles. The venue and programme may change from year to year.

At the beginning of December, the municipality holds the Dionysian Festivals of Young Wine each year, rotating between settlements. This festival also lasts two or three days. If you would like to combine your trip with a municipal event, check the date, venue and programme for the relevant year.
