Ruse is a good destination for a stay where you can explore the city’s culture and history from several perspectives. Places to start include a historic building housing the regional library, museum collections and exhibitions, the opera and puppet theatre, as well as churches, memorials, squares and parks. If you are looking for hotels in Ruse, deciding what interests you most can help with planning your trip: Would you mainly like to explore exhibitions and architectural history, plan to attend a performance, or include walks and green spaces? The following places represent different sides of the city.

Culture and City History

The Lyuben Karavelov Regional Library is a cultural monument of local significance. It is housed in a building constructed in 1911 for Bulgaria’s first Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This connection also makes the building interesting for travellers who want to learn about Ruse’s economic and cultural history in addition to its collections.

The Regional Historical Museum of Ruse opened in January 1902 as a museum collection at the Prince Boris I Boys’ High School. It holds 130,000 cultural artefacts and presents nine exhibitions, three of them outdoors. The range of exhibitions may change. The number of cultural artefacts describes the size of the collection, while the number of exhibitions refers to what is on display. If you are interested in a particular exhibition, check what is currently on offer before your visit.

Opera and Puppet Theatre

The Ruse State Opera was founded in 1949; its first performance was Verdi’s “La Traviata”. It received the “Crystal Lyre” award in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2012 and 2014. Its history can therefore be traced through its founding year, first performance and several award years. The Ruse Puppet Theatre presents modern puppet theatre performances for children, families and adults. The two venues offer different points of interest: the State Opera through its institutional history, and the puppet theatre through its format and the audiences mentioned. If you would like to include a particular performance in your stay, check the relevant programme.

Historic Sites with Different Highlights

The Roman fortress of Sexaginta Prista is designed as an open-air museum. The Pantheon of the National Revivalists is a national ossuary in Ruse, where 39 prominent Bulgarians are buried. The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the oldest church in Ruse and was built in 1632. All that remains of the Ruse fortress is the Kyunt Kapu Gate, with its iron-studded door. The difference between the two fortress sites is clear: Sexaginta Prista is designed as an open-air museum, while only the Kyunt Kapu Gate remains of the Ruse fortress.

Squares, Park and Transport Museum

The urban walking route passes through Svoboda and Batenberg squares. Twelve streets meet at Svoboda Square—a distinctive feature of the cityscape. The Youth Park offers opportunities for walking, relaxing and children’s play, while also conveying the city’s history and past. The National Transport Museum is located below Youth Park on the banks of the Danube and has three museum exhibitions. Different themes sit side by side: an urban walking route through two squares, a park offering opportunities to relax, and a museum with three exhibitions.

Lipnik Forest Park and Ilinden

Lipnik Forest Park is located in the area of the village of Nikolovo, 10 km east of Ruse. Every year on 2 August, Ilinden Day, a traditional folk festival takes place there. If the date matters for your travel plans, check the specific festival programme in advance, as future programmes may vary.
