Dolna Banya: Thermal Water, Mountain Nature and History

Dolna Banya is a mineral-water spa resort with hot thermal water. The hot thermal water has a temperature of 64 °C, a pH value of 8.8 and a low radon content. Temperature, pH value and radon content represent different properties of the water and make the town's thermal character tangible. Visitor activities associated with Dolna Banya include contact with mountain nature, walks, swimming and horse riding. These are complemented by introductory flights in small single-engine aircraft from Dolna Banya airfield. Nature-based activities, water and flights thus represent distinct types of activities alongside one another.

Location and Routes

The location combines a railway connection with a tourist road route. Dolna Banya is 8 km from Kostenets railway station. A road runs through the town and continues via Borovets and Samokov along a tourist route towards Rila Monastery. The location therefore encompasses both the individual railway connection and the link between several places along the route. In connection with visits to Dolna Banya, Borovets offers a winter sports option. Outside the resort, Dolna Banya is considered a quieter setting for relaxation. The connection with winter sports and the town's quieter character therefore belong to different parts of the surrounding area.

Culture

History is represented both by an active place of worship and by a historic thermal building. The active Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Dolna Banya was built in the 19th century. Some of its icons were painted by Dimitar Zografsky. The church therefore combines its construction period with a specific reference to its iconography and to Dimitar Zografsky. In the basin of Dolna Banya there is also the Roman Bath, a historic thermal building erected around 1700 on Roman foundations. The church and thermal building therefore represent two historically distinct points of reference within Dolna Banya.
