Opaka is located in Bulgaria’s Targovishte Province. The municipality stretches from a relatively flat river corridor to deeply dissected hill country. Medieval rock architecture, local memorial sites and traditional customs give the trip a variety of cultural highlights.

Landscape and a Hut with a View

The municipality of Opaka is hilly to semi-mountainous, and the Cherni Lom runs lengthwise through it. A relatively flat corridor lies along the river, while the rest of the municipality is more rugged and cut by numerous ravines. As a result, the terrain along the river differs markedly from that in the other parts of the municipality.

The Third March Hut in Gorsko Ablanovo offers views of the Cherni Lom valley and the wooded slopes of neighboring hills. It is set in natural surroundings, where the air is considered clean. The hut is regarded as a place for tourists and visitors to stay overnight or take a break; check the current operating arrangements locally.

Rock Monastery and Inscriptions near Krepcha

Krepcha Rock Monastery is located about 2 km from the center of Krepcha, next to the road to Golyamo Gradishte. The complex included monks’ cells, a monastery church and a burial church carved into the rock. Its walls bear drawings, runic symbols, and Old Hebrew and Cyrillic inscriptions. Two of the Cyrillic texts date from the 10th century; the inscriptions are considered valuable epigraphic monuments of medieval Bulgaria.

There is no purpose-built visitor access to the upper inscriptions. Photographs of them can be seen on an information board in the rock church. The Kalakoch Rock Monastery Complex near Krepcha is listed as freely accessible and 14 meters long. Kanchova Dupka Cave near Krepcha is listed as freely accessible, 28 meters long and 3 meters deep.

A cultural heritage project created a path to Krepcha Rock Monastery and set up a tourist information center in the youth center in the heart of Opaka. Before visiting, check whether the signs are up to date and the information is available.

A memorial wall in the center of Opaka bears the names of those who fell in the war. In the Bulgarian-Russian Friendship Park in Gorsko Ablanovo, memorial plaques and bas-reliefs commemorate Russian soldiers who fell in the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation.

St. George’s Church was built in 1864 and is a cultural monument of local significance. The wider area is also steeped in history: Gorsko Ablanovo and Katselovo are in an area where some of the most decisive battles in the Cherni Lom valley took place during the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation of 1877–1878. Gorsko Ablanovo is traditionally the setting for the municipality’s March 3 memorial ceremonies at the Kordyuzyu mass grave. If you are planning for a future date, confirm whether the event will be held that year.

Trifon Zarezan customs include pruning the vines, choosing a King of the Vineyards and horse races. During Lazaruvane, girls in traditional dress visit homes, sing traditional songs and collect eggs. Christmas traditions include Bulgarian folk songs performed by singers; boys known as “kotki” announce their arrival. A women’s singing group in the area continues to perform for audiences.
