Veliko Tarnovo Province: Culture and Nature

For planning your trip in Veliko Tarnovo Province, you can distinguish between two themes: historical sites and museums, and hiking trails and natural areas. Veliko Tarnovo and Elena offer connections to history; at Emen and Hotnitsa, the canyon, waterfall and trail conditions take centre stage. Historical Sites and Museums

Tsarevets was part of Tarnovo, which for more than two centuries was the capital and the political, religious, administrative and cultural centre of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Tsarevets includes the former royal palace complex and the fortified Patriarchal complex. Its components included a library, scriptorium, living quarters and offices. Archaeological excavations also uncovered the foundations of 470 residential buildings, 23 churches and four urban monasteries.

The Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs contains important medieval written monuments and columns; archaeological investigations at the site brought Kaloyan’s tomb to light. Trapezitsa contains archaeological remains of a fortress defence system, a military complex and 18 churches associated with medieval Tarnovgrad.

The Archaeological Museum in Veliko Tarnovo presents the region’s history chronologically: from Neolithic artefacts and finds from antiquity to royal seals and coins of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The Trapezitsa Architectural Heritage Centre and Museum uses interactive displays and excavated artefacts to show the customs and everyday life of medieval nobles and ordinary residents. The Museum of the Bulgarian National Revival and the Constituent Assembly is housed in a former konak built by Kolyu Ficheto. Commemorative events marking the adoption of the Tarnovo Constitution of 1879 were held there. The Daskalolivnitsa Complex in Elena commemorates Bulgaria’s first modern classroom school, which opened in 1844. The ensemble includes the school building, St Nicholas Church and the Kamburov Inn. St Nicholas Church is considered the oldest church in Elena and the surrounding region; written records date back to 1518. Arbanasi is an architectural reserve with several churches and two monasteries. The village is also home to the Kostantsalieva and Hadzhi Ilieva house museums. An exhibition on Gornooryahovski sudzhuk traces the history of its preparation through to its recognition as a protected geographical indication in 2011. The exhibition’s presentation may change.

Hiking Trails and Natural Areas

The Emen Eco-Trail runs for about 1.5 kilometres along the edge of the Negovanka Gorge and can be walked in either direction; the route is listed as taking around two hours. Rock formations and views into the canyon define the trail. The Emen Gorge was declared a natural monument in 1980; one of Bulgaria’s early eco-trails runs through it. Trail length and conditions may change, so check local information before hiking.

The Hotnitsa Eco-Trail is also about 1.5 kilometres long. Steep stairs, paths and wooden bridges lead to the top of the waterfall and the upper cascades; the hike takes approximately one hour. Despite their similar length, the estimated times differ: about one hour at Hotnitsa compared with around two hours on the Emen Trail. Another hiking route offers views of striking natural formations and opportunities to observe rare plant and animal species. It passes through the Churukovets area, over Mravunyaka and along the dry bed of a former tributary of the Yantra, before climbing to Kamenka Rock. The protected Bozhur Polyana is a habitat for the rare peony. Nearby is the Bozhur Hut, which offers basic overnight accommodation and refreshments; availability may change.
