Gorna Beshovitsa combines a hilly landscape with a local history shaped by art, church architecture and archaeology.

Landscape and Protected Areas

The settlement lies in a scenic valley. The Kosmatitsa stream flows beside the village; its area also contains a reservoir covering 57.512 decares. The stream and reservoir create different features in the landscape: the stream runs immediately beside the settlement, while the reservoir is a feature of the wider area. The hilly setting forms the backdrop to these local points of interest.

Parts of Gorna Beshovitsa lie within the BG0001014 “Karlukovo” protected area. The village also lies partly within the BG0000332 “Karlukovski Karst” bird protection area. The larger Karlukovo protected area includes habitats for the European wolf, the Eurasian otter and several horseshoe bat species. This information refers to habitats within the protected area, not to guaranteed wildlife sightings. Protected-area boundaries and management rules may be updated by the relevant authorities. If you plan activities in these areas, check the regulations in force at the time.

Art, Churches and History

Gorna Beshovitsa is the birthplace of sculptor Ivan Funev. A church building in the village has original stone reliefs on its stone façade. The Church of St Dimitar is designated a cultural monument of national importance and was consecrated in 1864. Different points of reference contribute to its historical context: a biographical connection to sculpture, original façade details and a church event with a specific date. In a relief, the image remains attached to its background; it is not a freestanding sculpture.

Archaeological history also reaches far back. It includes the remains of a Neolithic settlement and a Late Antique tomb with a Greek-inscribed tombstone dated to the 3rd century. Near the Church of St Dimitar there is also an unexcavated and unstudied necropolis dating from Roman times and the first centuries of Christianity. The periods represented therefore range from prehistoric settlement remains to Roman and early Christian contexts. The tomb, tombstone and necropolis are distinct archaeological points of reference.

Education is also part of the village's history: Dimitar pop Nedelkov opened the village's first cell school. Cultural interest thus extends beyond art, church architecture and archaeological finds to include the history of schooling.
