Cape Verde brings together island history, diverse landscapes, and activities on and in the water. The archipelago consists of ten islands, nine of which are inhabited. Santa Luzia is the only uninhabited island. When deciding where to travel, it is therefore worth first considering the different themes that shape the islands.

Island Character and Activities

The eastern islands are described as older, flat, and sandy; the western islands as newer, mountainous, rocky, and irregularly shaped. This general contrast conveys an impression of the range of landscapes without assigning every island to one of the two groups. The activities also cater to a variety of interests: kitesurfing and windsurfing are among the popular sports. The archipelago’s waters also offer sport fishing, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, and diving.

If you enjoy hiking, specific routes offer further inspiration. A trail connects Cruzinha and Ponta do Sol, passing along cliffs with panoramic views of the Atlantic. Monte Cara on São Vicente is a popular hiking destination, with views of Mindelo and the bay. Gatas Bay is known for its natural pools, described as safe, calm places to swim; the bay is also suitable for diving and snorkeling in a diverse marine environment.

Culture, Music, and History

Cidade Velha, formerly Ribeira Grande, was the archipelago’s first capital. It was granted city status in 1533 and is considered the earliest city in the tropics founded by Europeans. On Santiago, Cidade Velha is also an important place to learn more about Cape Verde’s history. In Sal Rei, colorful architecture sits alongside a museum that explores the island’s history and culture.

Music and dance are also part of the country’s cultural identity: morna, funaná, batuque, mazurca, and coladeira are traditions associated with Cape Verde. Its literary and musical output reflects European and African cultural roots. These themes offer a different perspective on a trip than landscapes and sports, and make a distinct focus when choosing a destination.

A museum in Tarrafal commemorates the struggle for freedom and the years of repression. It is located in a former concentration camp where political prisoners were held. On Maio, meanwhile, salt is part of the island’s longstanding history: the island was once a port for salt exports, and salt was produced there until the 20th century. Salt continues to play an important role in how the island is described today. The salt flats are associated with the stories and cultural identity of the local population.

Volcanic Landscapes, Hiking, and Cuisine

Fogo’s history dates back to the 15th century. The Fogo volcano is considered the highest point in the archipelago and is still active. Chã das Caldeiras is a volcanic valley at the foot of Pico do Fogo, surrounded by high lava walls. On Fogo, visitors can see the effects and changes caused by a volcanic eruption, explore the island’s history and geology, and visit its villages. The volcano and nature parks are presented as destinations that help visitors understand the islands.

Allow up to six hours for the hike on the Chã das Caldeiras trail; it must be completed with a local mountain guide. This specific time estimate and the requirement for a guide are particularly relevant when planning your trip. By contrast, the trail between Cruzinha and Ponta do Sol is described mainly in terms of its route along the cliffs and views of the Atlantic. The two descriptions emphasize different things: duration and a guide in one case, scenery and views in the other.

Cuisine also offers a way to experience the culture. Cachupa is made with meat or fish, stewed beans, and corn, and is served with cooked vegetables, potatoes, and boiled bananas. The cuisine also includes fish, seafood, and fruit. Other traditional dishes include lobster, modje—fried or grilled fish with spicy onions and tomato sauce—and deep-fried moray eel.
