Ljubuški: Discover Culture, Nature and Hotels

The old town of Ljubuški was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 2003. Above Ljubuški stands the Herceg Stjepan Fortress on the summit of Buturovica; it was built in the Middle Ages.

Culture and History

An important site of cultural history is the Humac Museum in the Franciscan Monastery of St. Anthony of Padua. It was founded in 1884 and is considered the oldest museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It displays archaeological material from the wider Herzegovina region dating from prehistoric, ancient and medieval periods spanning almost 16,000 years. The complex also includes a lapidarium with stone monuments in the monastery courtyard.

In the wider surroundings of Ljubuški, Humac is home to the partially researched and preserved remains of the Roman military complex of Gračine, dating from the 1st to the 3rd century. The wider surroundings also contain seven necropolises with a total of 214 registered medieval stećak tombstones.

Landscape and Trails

The Koćuša Waterfall is located in the village of Veljaci in the municipality of Ljubuški. It is five metres high and 50 metres long and is situated near historic mills and pounding mills.

Cycling routes are available in Ljubuški, allowing visitors to explore the destination. A relatively flat running and walking path along the Trebižat embankment in Ljubuško polje has few obstacles and is therefore suitable for beginner runners.

Outdoor Activities

Paragliding is available in Ljubuški both for cross-country pilots and recreational pilots. At 954 metres, Vrlosinj is the highest peak in the municipality of Ljubuški and is offered as a recreational hiking tour.

Hercegovina GO! offers an off-road safari through Ljubuški in Pinzgauer all-terrain vehicles. The Ljubuški Outdoor Festival takes place in May next to Kravica Waterfall and includes competitions, entertainment and music.

On the canoe safari, the journey begins on calm water and becomes faster and more exciting near the river mouth.

Festivals and Music

The Ljubuški Carnival takes place every year towards the end of winter. The annual children's music festival in Ljubuški brings children together for an entertaining competition programme.

The Ljubuški Jazz Fest features seven-day jazz workshops that give interested young people the opportunity to receive jazz training. During the holidays, an event with a variety of cultural, entertainment and culinary offerings takes place in the town centre.

Wine and Herzegovinian Cuisine

The Smokva wine bar offers local wines for tasting. At the “Kušaj ljubuška vina” event, wines from nine wineries in Ljubuški are sampled.

A family wine cellar offers wine tastings for up to 50 guests, accompanied by spirits produced on site and traditional Herzegovinian fare consisting of cheese, prosciutto, fruit and vegetables.

Transport Connections and Further Destinations

Ljubuški is connected via the A1 motorway and regional roads towards Međugorje–Mostar, Čapljina–Stolac and Grude–Posušje.
