Culture and History
The Karađozbeg Mosque was built in 1557 based on a design by the Turkish architect Kodža Mimar Sinan. Mitropolija Vladičin Dvor was built in 1908 during the Austro-Hungarian period. The Franciscan monastery building houses a significant collection of paintings by Italian masters from the 16th and 17th centuries. The late antique basilica in Cim dates from the end of the 5th or the beginning of the 6th century; its archaeological area was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina on January 20, 2004.
Museums and Exhibitions
The Old Bridge Museum presents the reconstruction project for the 16th-century bridge carried out from 1999 to 2004; the museum also showcases the Tara and Halebija towers. It has an observation platform in the Tara Tower complex on the left bank of the Neretva. The Old Bridge Museum also includes an authentic archaeological site beneath the access to the tower, as well as exhibitions featuring movable archaeological material and archival and architectural documents.
The MUM Interpretation Centre has an ethnological collection with 70 exhibits and guides visitors to the original locations and content. The permanent exhibition “Life and Culture of the Urban and Rural Population of Mostar and Its Surroundings” presents local urban and rural life and the corresponding culture. It also addresses the food culture of Herzegovina, the tradition of coffee drinking and tobacco cultivation.
