Škvorec combines an extensive château complex with a late Baroque church and a local history dating back to 1497. If you are looking for hotels in Škvorec, these highlights can help you decide whether to focus your trip mainly on historic buildings, the town centre, or nature and walking routes in the wider municipality. They represent different aspects of the place: the château and church shape its character, while the park, nature monument, educational trail and cycle routes appeal to other interests.

Château Complex and Townscape

The protected château complex extends from the northwestern part of the municipality to the centre. Its components include the so-called Old Château and New Château, the former farmyard, the perimeter wall with gates, the château park and the grounds of the enclosed area. The complex therefore comprises not only two main buildings, but also architectural and landscaped features. The two main buildings form the west side of the large lower square and face the church. This arrangement makes the square a landmark where Škvorec’s architectural history can be read.

The New Château is a single-storey, elongated building. Its thirteen-bay wing and adjoining chapel are connected to the corner of the Old Château by a broad connecting section. The wing’s façade is divided into thirteen bays. This makes the architectural relationship between the two châteaux tangible: the connecting section joins the elongated building to the Old Château, while the wing and its chapel add a distinct form to the complex.

Church and Local History

The late Baroque Church of St. Anne was built between 1759 and 1767. It faces the two château buildings across the large lower square. A cemetery with a cemetery chapel or mortuary adjoins the church. The château and church thus form two architectural landmarks directly opposite each other in the townscape.

The dedication to St. Anne also connects the church with the Svatoanenská pilgrimage fair. Municipal announcements for 2025 and 2026 scheduled a mass in the church to celebrate the Feast of St. Anne, followed by a pilgrimage celebration at the U Zálabských inn.

A precise date marks Škvorec’s elevation to the status of a market town: on 13 December 1497, Jan Škvorecký z Klinštejna received a charter from King Vladislaus Jagiellon. It elevated Škvorec to a market town and granted permission to hold weekly markets on Fridays. This historic event thus links the town’s development with the market rights of the time.

Nature and Routes

The landscape around Škvorec has a history of its own: Višnovka Nature Park originated as a historic orchard. Near Třebohostice lies the former, now flooded, Lom Na plachtě quarry. As a nature monument, it protects granite outcrops with flooded extraction hollows over an area of 0.7918 ha. The protected area has been in existence since 1990.

Within the wider municipality, the Hmyzí trail runs from Třebohostice to Zlatá and back. Opened in 2024, the route is about 3 km long, has ten stops and is intended as an educational walk for visitors. Its route, length and stops give a concrete sense of this excursion option, without requiring comparison with the buildings in the town centre.

From Škvorec, you can join cycle routes in the direction of Úvaly; the paved paths are also suitable for inline skating. If you plan to include cycling or skating routes in your trip, check the conditions of the routes before setting off. Škvorec therefore pairs historic architecture and local history with interests focused on nature and outdoor activities.
