Čáslav brings together several themes that can shape your stay: architectural and town history, historical museums and agricultural technology. If you’re looking for a hotel in Čáslav, considering these different highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your interests. The churches and tower represent historic architectural styles; the Městské muzeum and Žižkova síň offer their own perspectives, while the NZM Čáslav focuses on machinery and its history.

Town history through architectural periods and events

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul combines several periods of construction. It includes a predecessor church built in the mid-12th century and dedicated to Saint Michael. An Early Gothic presbytery was added in the 13th century; in the 14th century, the Gothic three-aisled nave and the Chapel of the Sorrowful Virgin Mary were built. This makes it possible to trace the development of the building over several centuries.

A historical event is also associated with the church: the Čáslav Landtag was held there in 1421. For choosing what interests you, this links architectural history with a specific event in the town’s history.

The surviving Otakarova bašta is a 22-metre-high cylindrical tower from the former Brodská or Jeníkovská gatehouse. It was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in 1883 and has been preserved in this form to the present day. Its height, its former role as a gatehouse and its reconstruction describe different aspects of the same building.

The Church of Saint Elizabeth is a protected cultural monument. It has been protected since 3 May 1958 and bears the registration number ÚSKP 22699/2-922. Another historical connection dates to the aftermath of the devastating town fire of 1522: a new hospital and, beside it, a church with a cemetery were built in the suburban area.

Museums covering Hussite history and agricultural technology

The Městské muzeum Čáslav is one of the oldest rural museums in Czechia. It is housed in a building dating from 1884, built in the Neo-Renaissance style. Here, architecture and the museum’s purpose come together in one building.

Žižkova síň houses an exhibition commemorating Jan Žižka of Trocnov and exploring the history of the Hussite movement. The NZM Čáslav has a different focus: it is dedicated to the history of mass-produced series of tractors, combine harvesters and ploughs. The museum displays agricultural machinery in a modern exhibition and in storage areas that are partially open to visitors; these include rare prototypes that never went into series production.

The themes are therefore clearly distinct: Žižkova síň focuses on a historical figure and a movement, while the NZM explores the development of mass-produced machinery series. If you’d like to focus your stay more on town and cultural history or on the history of technology, these museums offer different starting points.

More outdoor highlights

The grounds of the NZM Čáslav have a cycle path, a traffic training area, a pump track and a workout zone. So, alongside the exhibition, the site includes several named facilities. Visitor facilities can change over time. If you’d like to include these in your plans, check the current conditions before your visit.

Another place of interest is Čáslavský hrádek: it lies near Podměstský rybník and is now part of Vodranty Forest Park. This adds a distinct landscape setting to the buildings and museums. When choosing your destination, you can therefore choose between historic architectural styles, museum exhibits and this connection to the forest park.
