Chářovice: Walks, Landscape and History
Accommodation in Chářovice
Chářovice is a good choice for a stay focused on peaceful rural surroundings, walks and local history. The landscape and cultural landmarks offer different perspectives on the area: fields, forests, shallow valleys and ponds outdoors, as well as a stone bell tower, a chapel and a war memorial. This gives you a practical choice when planning your trip: should you focus on walks, or would you also like to include the area’s historical connections?
Landscape and Nature Around Chářovice
The landscape around Chářovice features a varied mix of fields, forests, shallow valleys and ponds. Chářovice and the surrounding area are well suited to outings and walks in peaceful rural surroundings. Chářovický potok rises about 300 metres south of Chářovice. Significant ornithological observations have been made at Velký Chlebský rybník in the Chářovice area, including sightings of specially protected animal species. If you would like to include nature observation alongside the landscape, the pond is the specific link to birdlife; the stream’s source, by contrast, is a geographical landmark.
Walks and a Route from 2025
The 49th Pochod Posázavím in 2025 followed a 14-kilometre route from Týnec nad Sázavou through Chářovice, Chrášťany, Václavice and Hrusice, and via Krušičany back to Týnec nad Sázavou. Chářovice was therefore along the route, not at its starting point or finish. The 14 kilometres referred to the entire route for that year’s event. The distinction is useful for planning: the general suitability for walks applies to Chářovice and the surrounding area; the specific distance belongs to this 2025 event route.
Local History and Remembrance
During the Second World War, Chářovice became part of the Waffen-SS Benešov military training area. On 1 April 1943, the residents of Chářovice were forced to leave their homes.
The war memorial commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War as well as local police sergeant Jaroslav Piát. He lost his life on 5 May 1945 during the liberation of Prague. The dedications thus combine remembrance of those who fell in the First World War with a person and an event from 1945.
Bell Tower and Chapel
A stone bell tower stands in the park in Chářovice. The Chapel of Saint John is one of the area’s regionally and locally significant cultural landmarks. Together with the war memorial, these provide three distinct local points of interest: a stone structure in the park, a significant cultural landmark and a place of remembrance. If you include cultural history in your plans, you can distinguish between architectural heritage, religious history and public commemoration.
