Grunta: Church, Landscape and Trails
Accommodation in Grunta
As a destination, Grunta brings together an important church, a hiking route and a designated cycling route. When planning your stay, you can consider these highlights separately: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Grunta (Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie v Gruntě), the northern loop of the Stříbrná stezka and the Vinařská naučná cyklotrasa. The routes differ in length and type; the church adds a cultural dimension.
Church and local history
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Grunta (Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie v Gruntě) is an important Neo-Romanesque and Secession-style cultural monument. Individual visits are possible with a printed guide. Opening arrangements are seasonal; check them before you travel if you plan to visit. Its architectural classification gives your stay a cultural focus, distinct from information about the routes’ lengths, courses and markings.
Grunta was probably founded in the mid-13th century by German miners, during the reign of King Přemysl Otakar II (1253–1278), when silver ore was discovered in the surrounding area. The presumed founding of the settlement and the church’s architectural classification are two distinct cultural and historical topics: one concerns miners and silver ore, the other a Neo-Romanesque and Secession-style cultural monument. Visitors interested in the town’s history can consider these aspects separately, without combining them into a single building history.
Hiking to and around Grunta
The northern loop of the Stříbrná stezka is 14 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and passes through the Na Vrších Nature Reserve on its way to Grunta. The start and finish are at the Na Pašince restaurant in Kaňk; the loop includes 12 stops. The length and difficulty help you gauge the scope of the hike, while the stated start and finish points and the stops provide more detail about its course. Trail conditions and markings can change and should be taken into account when planning your hike.
The trail runs from the former Turkaňk mine along a road past an orchard to Grunta. Another route description concerns the nature trail: in Grunta, it leads to the church and then continues to the yellow and, subsequently, the green hiking trail markings. In this nature trail description, the church is a waypoint along the route; the northern loop, by contrast, is described by its 14-kilometre length, 12 stops and start and finish in Kaňk. The two route descriptions therefore differ in the landmarks they name for planning purposes.
Cycling route and landscape
The Vinařská naučná cyklotrasa is 4.835 kilometres long and designated as cycle route No. 0091. It connects to the local Kutná Hora–Grunta road. It is considerably shorter than the 14-kilometre northern loop; it is also a designated cycling route rather than the moderate-difficulty hike described above.
The landscape offers another way to experience the area: around Grunta, the Polabská rovina Kolínska gradually gives way to the kutnohorské vrchy hills. This transition adds a landscape dimension to the specific route details. If you are weighing up culture and outdoor activities for your stay, you will find different options: the church and its visitor arrangements, the longer loop through the nature reserve, or the designated cycling route.
A dated event
On 28 March 2026, Grunta hosted the sixth edition of the Velikonoční stezka. Children completed various tasks and received small sweets as a reward. This information relates to the event on that specific date.
