Herink: Village Walks and History
Accommodation in Herink
If you are considering Herink as a destination for a stay, local history and walks are fitting topics. The stories range from the former uses of the ponds to archaeological traces of settlements; there is also a chapel and a protected individual tree. The landscape, village life and architectural history each have different time frames.
A Walk with Marked Stops
The municipal activity “Máme rádi Herink” is an entertaining, educational walk through the village. At stops marked on a map, QR code signs display information, pictures or maps relating to each location. The material is assigned to a specific stop. If you are interested in individual places and their history, this stop-by-stop format suits the way you explore Herink.
Pond History and Water Management
The V topolech pond, also called Na obci, was once a meeting place for the whole village. Its uses at the time included burning witches, ice skating in winter and summer gatherings of neighbors around a fire. In suitable weather, young people from the entire surrounding area went swimming in the pond.
Another aspect of the local waterscape can be seen on Na Hrázi Street. Part of the street was once the dam of the largest of several ponds in Herink; it held back water from the Osnický stream and the surrounding fields. While the history of V topolech mainly involves community uses, Na Hrázi points to the former function of a dam for retaining water.
Chapel, Tree and Archaeological Traces
A chapel was built on StarĂ© návsi in 1908 beside a granite cross. Herink’s chapel is still considered a worthwhile destination for walks. The LĂpa u transformátoru in Herink is a protected individual tree; it was first designated on January 25, 1983.
Settlement traces were discovered in the cadastral area of Herink during a rescue excavation in the area of the ÄŚistiÄŤka stop. The oldest settlement identified there dates to the 6th to 5th century BC. Remains of large above-ground wooden buildings, pottery fragments and a glass bead were unearthed at the ÄŚistiÄŤka archaeological site. The finds thus include both traces of buildings and smaller objects.
Earth ramparts were discovered in Tvrzka in the 1930s during maintenance work on the stream bed. Together with the settlement traces at Čistička, they are among Herink’s archaeological subjects, but differ in the location and time frame of their discovery.
Different Time Frames
The dates mentioned refer to different events: the 6th to 5th century BC is the dating of the oldest identified settlement; 1908 marks the construction of the chapel. The 1930s refer to the discovery of the earth ramparts during work on the stream bed, while January 25, 1983, marks the tree’s first designation. This distinguishes early settlement, architectural history, discovery and protected status.
