Hlízov: Cultural History, Monuments and Brewery
Accommodation in Hlízov
When looking for a hotel for a trip to Hlízov, you can plan your stay around local themes: the castle and local history, memorials and archaeological evidence, Pivovar Holanďan, or a cycling route to Starý Kolín. Each stop offers a different focus. The archaeological finds are kept at the Museum of Kolín; a brewery tour must be arranged in advance, and the ceremonial chapel can be visited by arrangement.
History of Hlízov
The written history of the village begins in 1142, when Hlízov was first mentioned as a possession of Sedlec Monastery, which held the village until 1421. Hlízov’s first fortress was probably built as early as the end of the 15th century and is first documented in 1547. The presumed construction date and the first documented mention are therefore two distinct dates. The Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was added to Hlízov Castle in 1746. The castle and the entire farmyard are listed as immovable cultural monuments in the Central Register of Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 45795/2–1132. These architectural and historical details give the village several specific points of historical interest.
Archaeology and Remembrance
Archaeological and commemorative evidence offers a different window onto the past. A prehistoric grave in Hlízov contained 20 vessels, including numerous Bell Beakers; the finds are kept at the Museum of Kolín. The monument to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled on 29 June 1924. It is an obelisk made of Hořice sandstone. Together, the archaeological burial finds and a 20th-century monument represent different historical perspectives. If you are especially interested in the grave finds, they are kept in Kolín, not Hlízov.
Monuments and Access
The stone column shrine in Hlízov dates from the first half of the 19th century and was restored in 1995. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument and is freely accessible. Check local conditions before visiting, as access arrangements may change. The ceremonial chapel stands in the middle of the cemetery at the southern edge of the village, on the road to Malín; it can be accessed by arrangement. Southeast of the village, protected lime trees grow at the cemetery at Lípy u Panny Marie. They form a prominent aesthetic feature of the landscape. The column shrine, chapel and lime trees complement the history of the castle and village with religious and landscape monuments, but access differs for each.
Brewery and Beer Selection
For travelers interested in beer, Pivovar Holanďan offers both a regular selection and tours. The beers include a 10° draught beer, an 11° semi-dark lager, an 11° Kazbek ALE and a 12° lager. The brewery adds rotating specialities, so the selection may change. A 30-minute tour with a tasting of the current tank beers is available for groups of five to 15 people and must be arranged at least two days in advance. Availability and booking conditions may change, so confirm your appointment before traveling.
Cycling Route to Starý Kolín
For the ride from Hlízov to Starý Kolín, the route description published on 22 February 2026 recommends cycling route CKH2 along the blue-marked KČT trail beside the Klejnárka. The destination and described route are thus specified. Before setting out, check the current trail conditions and markings, as both may change. The route is a potential focus for your travel plans in its own right, alongside the historical sites and brewery tour.
