When choosing a destination, details that shape your stay can often help: its waterside setting, village character and local history. Horousany lies at an elevation of 216 metres at the confluence of the Horoušanský potok and Jirenský potok streams. At the heart of the village is the Horoušanský rybník, also at an elevation of 216 metres and covering around 2.8 hectares. The village centre is on the right bank; the settlement is arranged around a pond. This means the water and village layout shape the character of the place, while squares, monuments and recurring events offer further aspects to consider when planning your trip.

Pond, streams and village squares

A second village square lies north of the former manor house. It has a children’s playground, a well and large willow trees. Above Horousany, some wetlands and reed beds remain along the Jirenský potok. The pond-side village centre and the wetlands along the stream thus have distinct landscape characteristics.

The Horoušanský rybník is currently used mainly for sport fishing. Fishing at the pond follows the “catch and release” principle. If you would like to fish there, check local conditions and any required permits in advance. The pond can therefore be considered both a defining feature of the village and in terms of its current use.

Village square and monuments

The village square features an ensemble comprising a stone bell-tower chapel and a cast-iron cross on a stone pedestal; both are protected monuments. The rectangular masonry chapel dates from the 19th century and effectively forms the centre of the municipality. A sandstone cross on a high pedestal also stands in the roughly triangular village square. It bears a carved depiction of Christ, is dated 1812 and is protected as an immovable cultural monument. At the top are a Latin cross with a relief of the Crucifixion and a scroll bearing the inscription “INRI”.

The village’s history of remembrance is also tied to specific buildings and places. The Šámal Farmhouse, house number 22 on Baumanova Street near the former school, is considered one of the most interesting surviving examples of the village’s original buildings. A memorial plaque there commemorates Otakar Šámal, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1942.

At the intersection of Baumanova and U Mlýna, a memorial stone commemorates Břetislav Bauman and his wife Emílie. The building below it was a barn belonging to Mill Farm No. 11; the couple lived and worked there before and during the Second World War. Břetislav Bauman was arrested at this location by the Gestapo on 15 July 1942. The original mill was demolished in the 20th century.
