Hostín u Vojkovic: Church, Chapel and Landscape
Accommodation in Hostín U Vojkovic
Hostín u Vojkovic combines a layered architectural history with an open landscape. The village is home to the parish church “Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie” and the cemetery chapel “Kaple Božího těla”; the natural-looking body of water Selská tůň lies on its northern edge. There are also sports facilities.
Several building phases at the parish church
The parish church “Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie” is a Romanesque and Early Gothic religious building. After 1615, it was partly redesigned in the Renaissance style; a Baroque redesign followed in the 18th century. A Gothic south portal and the Early Gothic presbytery have been preserved. Thus, early architectural forms stand alongside later alterations to the same building. The church is already mentioned as a parish church in 1290; its first mention dates from 1320. These dates link the long history of the religious building with its several construction phases.
The Baroque cemetery chapel
The chapel “Kaple Božího těla” was built in the Baroque style between 1735 and 1736 under the direction of the Italian Jeroným Costa. It has an original circular floor plan, with an internal diameter of 12 m and an external diameter of 17 m. The two measurements distinguish the inner and outer dimensions and make its shape more specific than a mere description of its style. Together with its construction dates, the chapel forms a distinct architectural theme alongside the multi-phase parish church.
Selská tůň and the surrounding landscape
Selská tůň lies on the northern edge of Hostín u Vojkovic and is a natural-looking body of water. It is a remnant of a naturally deepened section of a meander of the Vltava. Its banks include riparian communities and alluvial woodland. The Selská tůň area is a habitat for specially protected amphibian, reptile and bird species. This brings together a river landscape feature and several habitat types in one place. For nature lovers, this focus complements the open landscape of Hostín u Vojkovic.
Hostín u Vojkovic lies in a wide, flat, open area along the Labe and Vltava rivers. This plain is a distinct aspect of the village, alongside its individual buildings and Selská tůň. In the wider region, fruit and vegetable growing, as well as sugar beet cultivation, have a long tradition due to the soil and climate. This agricultural history adds a regional context to the natural landscape: the area is shaped not only by its scenery, but also by traditional land use.
