Křečovice – Culture and traces of Josef Suk
Accommodation in Křečovice
Křečovice and Josef Suk
Josef Suk provides a clear cultural point of reference in Křečovice, which can be explored through several locations. The Josef Suk Memorial is in the house where he spent a significant part of his life. His birthplace is in the Josef Suk Primary School and Kindergarten. The house and birthplace therefore represent different biographical milestones: one marks a longer period of his life, while the other is his place of birth.
The Church of St. Luke
The Church of St. Luke can be explored through its architectural form and several specific details. It has a single nave and an irregular floor plan; the massive north tower is asymmetrically positioned. The main altar and the painting above it also date from different periods: the altar is a Renaissance main altar, while the canvas painting was made in 1840. The furnishings thus bring together two different historical dates.
Another detail can be found outside: a sculpture is set into the exterior plaster beside a side entrance. It is described as a “pagan god,” although its identity is uncertain. The church thus draws attention both to the altar and canvas painting inside and to a single, unidentified work set into the exterior plaster.
Sukova alej and film history
At the northeastern edge of Křečovice, Sukova alej runs parallel to the road to Strážovice. Along the avenue, stones set into the ground bear the carved names of works by Josef Suk. Unlike the church, whose features are tied to its structure and furnishings, the stones here carry the memory of his works along the avenue. Their location on the edge of the village and their alignment parallel to the road also provide clear orientation for finding this memorial site.
Another cultural trace leads to the film “Vesničko má, středisková”: it was filmed in Křečovice in 1984 and 1985. Filming also took place in the surrounding area. The film connection therefore encompasses both Křečovice and its surroundings, and can be dated to the two years mentioned.
Plan a visit to the birthplace
Visits to the birthplace must be arranged with the Křečovice Municipal Office; it is accessible only through the cemetery. The planned opening date is the last Sunday in May, when a memorial concert for Josef Suk is held in the Church of St. Luke. As access arrangements may change, confirm your visit and the date in advance with the Municipal Office.
Cycling loop and route to Křečovický potok
There is also a specific point of reference for planning a cycling trip: the cycling loop to the Drahoušek lookout tower passes through Křečovice between Vlkonice and Osečany. If you plan to include this route, check its alignment and signage in advance, as conditions may change.
Another point of reference is the Křečovický potok area, accessible via the red-marked trail from Křečovice to Osečany. The two routes have different destinations: the cycling loop leads to the Drahoušek lookout tower, while the red-marked trail leads to the Křečovický potok area. Check the trail markings on site.
