Kadlín can be explored through a range of themes: the Hradišť observation tower offers views across the landscape, while the church and exhibitions provide insights into architectural history and rural work. The Hradišť nature trail also has its own focus, with information about plants and signs about regional wildlife. This gives you a choice of different points of interest when planning your trip.

Hradišť Observation Tower and Nature Trail

The Hradišť observation tower stands on a hill above Kadlín. Its covered viewing platform is 15 metres above the ground. From there, you can see Bezděz, Ralsko, Ještěd, the Jizera Mountains and the Krkonoše Mountains; the view also includes Milešovka in the České středohoří, Říp and nearby Vrátenská hora, which also has an observation tower. These landmarks include individual prominent peaks as well as larger landscape areas. This gives the tower a connection to the landscape that differs from the cultural and historical themes found in the village.

From Kadlín, wooden signposts marked “Hradišť” point the way to the tower; from there, an asphalt path of less than half a kilometre leads to it. As signs or access rules may change, it is advisable to check the information before your visit.

The Hradišť nature trail provides information about plants and runs alongside mixtures of old Bohemian meadow seeds sown along the path. Rest benches have signs about mammals, insects and birds of the regional landscape. The nature trail thus draws attention to both vegetation and wildlife: the meadow mixtures offer a different focus from the information on the benches.

Church and Rural History

The Church of St James the Greater was first mentioned as a parish church as early as 1384. Its architectural history spans the original Gothic form and the Baroque reconstruction of 1724. The protected church complex comprises the church, bell tower, mortuary chapel, perimeter wall and the plots of the enclosed site. There are therefore two aspects to explore: changes to the church building and the components of the protected complex.

Several exhibitions in Kadlín explore different aspects of rural work. The rural blacksmith exhibition presents the home of a village blacksmith, along with hammers, tongs and a forge; it also features items made using these tools. The exhibition of old farming technology focuses on agricultural equipment, including ploughs, seed drills and threshing machines. Together, the blacksmith’s work and the technology used for field cultivation offer different perspectives on rural work.

The exhibition of hoes adds another perspective, with tools from different periods: it displays a hoe found at Hradišť as a historical museum piece, hoes made in the smithy and a hoe from the 21st century. The archaeological find, the blacksmith’s work and the more recent example can thus be viewed as different aspects of one object.

Another exhibition is devoted to crops grown in the region. Visitors can handle rye, wheat and barley, rub the grains between their fingers and smell them; they can also learn about 15 different decimal scales. Experiencing the grains firsthand offers a different focus from the hoes, tools and machines in the other exhibitions.
