Kalivody: Circular Trails, Beech Forests and Mining History
Accommodation in Kalivody
Explore Kalivody through specific hikes, beech landscapes and traces of hard coal mining. Two circular trails differ considerably in length: approximately six kilometres on Bučinami ke štole Jindřich and around eleven kilometres on Za falešnou borovicí. There is also an educational trail covering forestry and mining, as well as an annual hiking event. This gives you different options for planning your trip, with a focus on exercise, nature or local history.
Circular Trails and Hiking Themes
The Za falešnou borovicí circular trail is approximately 11 kilometres long. It leads from Kalivody through Bdín and over Mount Vošková to Přerubenice, and then back to Kalivody. Along the way, the route offers views of the surrounding valleys. At approximately six kilometres, the Bučinami ke štole Jindřich hike is considerably shorter.
This hike begins at the rest area beside the inn in Kalivody and runs mostly along forest roads and paths. It is not marked and is not suitable for walks with a pushchair. One of its stops is a shelter with play features, including a wooden xylophone. The route length, trail conditions and stated limitations can help you decide whether this walk meets your needs.
The Naučná stezka Kalivodské bučiny educational trail introduces additional topics. One information board covers forest management, the importance of old and dead trees for forest life, and the significance of the beech tree to people. Another board along the trail covers coal mining in the area around Kalivody and points out the Jindřich coal adit, about 50 metres away.
Beech Landscapes and Džbán Nature Park
The Dolíky landscape near Kalivody is part of Džbán Nature Park. The park is characterised by long, deep valleys and extensive forests, predominantly of beech, and it protects this landscape. In addition to the specific circular trails, the wider landscape features that characterise the nature park are also a focus.
Kalivodské bučiny is an area of European importance covering almost 200 hectares. Its beech stands are up to 150 years old. The educational trail also explores beeches from another perspective: its topics range from forest management to the role of old and dead trees in forest life. Information about the size and age of the stands is therefore complemented by questions about how forests and trees are understood.
Traces of Hard Coal Mining and Local Stories
The Jindřich coal adit is a tangible point of reference for the mining history of the surrounding area. The Štola Jindřich provides evidence of deep hard coal mining from around the turn of the 20th century. Together with the information board about coal mining, it connects the historical topic with the adit mentioned on the educational trail. The board indicates that it is approximately 50 metres away.
Local storytelling traditions also include tales about a lord of Kalivody with a black soul. Alongside the themes of nature and mining, these tales add another dimension, offering a glimpse into the stories associated with the area.
Annual Hiking Day
The Kalivodské hůlkování hiking and Nordic walking event takes place every year on the last Saturday in June. It is open to anyone who would like to take part in the hike. If you plan your trip around this date, check the date of the relevant year's event in advance.
Getting Your Bearings Before the Hike
Kalivody is outside the marked hiking trails, cycling trails and cycle touring routes. The Bučinami ke štole Jindřich hike is also unmarked. If you plan to do it, check the intended route before setting off. The approximate distances offer a direct comparison when choosing between the two circular trails; the description of the shorter route also gives its starting point, the predominant trail surface and the restriction on walks with a pushchair.
