Karlík: Nature, hiking and history
Accommodation in Karlík
If you’re looking for a hotel in Karlík, the town’s natural and historical attractions provide a practical starting point for planning your trip. The Karlické údolí Nature Reserve, a 15-kilometre hike, and the history of Karlík Castle and the Rotunda of Saint Martin offer different perspectives on Karlík.
Nature and hiking
The Karlické údolí Nature Reserve covers wooded slopes on the left bank of the Karlický stream and a smaller area on the right bank. It stretches between Roblín and Karlík and is important for biodiversity conservation. The stream, its banks and the area’s span between the two villages give the reserve a clearly defined geographical layout.
One hike with Karlík in its name is “S císařovnou Eliškou z Karlštejna na Karlík” (“With Empress Eliška from Karlštejn to Karlík”). It is 15 km long and rated moderately difficult. The distance and rating answer different planning questions: how long the route is and what level of difficulty it is assigned. You can compare both with your plans for the day. The starting point is listed as the Zadní Třebaň railway stop.
In Karlík, you can leave the red-marked route and continue along the blue-marked path to Dobřichovice railway station. Check the current timetable for this connection; conditions on hiking trails may vary. The distance, difficulty rating and starting point provide different planning information, without specifying a walking time.
Karlík Castle and historic routes
Remains of the ramparts and masonry survive from Karlík Castle. Judging by these traces, it was probably a small castle. During the reign of Charles IV, it was an important part of the defence system protecting Karlštejn. It also served to protect a historic route from Prague via Vonoklasy and Mořina to Karlštejn.
The castle can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: the surviving traces suggest that it was relatively small, while its historical importance lies in its protective role. The castle was connected both to Karlštejn’s defence system and to a specific route between Prague and Karlštejn.
Rotunda of Saint Martin
The Romanesque Rotunda of Saint Martin is considered the first Christian church in the town. It was probably founded during the reign of Přemysl Otakar I, towards the end of the 12th century. This probable dating places the church in an early period of the town’s history without assigning it an exact year.
The church was substantially enlarged in the Baroque style in 1767. It was renovated inside and out in 1834, then rebuilt from the ground up in 1889. This sequence includes different types of structural work: an enlargement, a later renovation and, finally, a complete rebuild. Both the rotunda’s probable founding and the changes that followed are therefore important to its history.
Karlík offers several points of interest for planning your trip: you can assess the hike by its distance, difficulty rating and starting point. The castle and the church, meanwhile, offer two different ways to explore the town’s history—through a defensive role and the building phases of a religious structure.
