Klášterní Skalice brings together a former Cistercian complex and the Chapel of Panny Marie, historic sculptures, and the landscape along the Kouřimka. For travelers looking to combine their stay with architectural history and regional trails, there are several specific points to consider when choosing a destination.

Monastery Complex and Architectural History

The Cistercian monastery in Klášterní Skalice was the order’s most recent foundation in the Bohemian lands. Its history includes both an unfinished building and the end of the monastery during the Hussite era. A surviving fragment of the crossing pier is ten meters high and locates the monastery church on the northern side of the complex. The height gives a tangible sense of the fragment’s size, while the north side indicates its position within the complex. Historical context and a specific architectural detail thus sit side by side.

The Chapel of Panny Marie

The former monastery chapel of Panny Marie was attached to the northern side of the château and served as its chapel. Its relationship to the château therefore describes both its location and a former function. The chapel was remodeled in the Neo-Gothic style, particularly on its eastern façade. The collapsed walls of the château or monastery chapel are also part of its architectural history: they were rebuilt. The chapel’s use as a château chapel, the design of its eastern façade, and the rebuilding of its walls can thus be considered as distinct aspects of its history.

Sculptures and Monuments

The statue “sv. Jana Nepomuckého” is the work of an unknown artist from around 1750. Together with the statues “Panna Maria,” “svatá Anna,” and “svatý Prokop,” it forms a symbolic protective cross, whose arms intersect in the area of the former monastery. Its significance also lies in the relationship between the four figures and their shared connection to the former monastery. Another monument, “Boží muka,” is a damaged fragment made of red sandstone from Nučice, also dating from around 1750. The entire upper section is missing. While the four statues are described as a symbolic arrangement, this monument’s fragmentary condition is its defining feature. Both details offer different perspectives on the site’s historic sculptures.

The Kouřimka and Regional Trails

The riverbed of the small Kouřimka River forms the western boundary of the former monastery complex. Rocky outcrops rise above the stream. Both the former monastery’s position by the riverbed and the rocks above the Kouřimka are therefore specific landscape features of the site. A green-marked regional trail connects Pečky and Kouřim via Dobřichov, Radim, Chotutice, Vrbčany, Žabonosy, and Klášterní Skalice. If you include this route in your plans, check the current trail markings on site.
