Knezeves: Plane Spotting and Baroque Discoveries
Accommodation in Knezeves
Kněževes combines a plane spotting platform with Baroque buildings and archaeological traces. This offers two different starting points for planning your trip: an interest in aircraft and the history of the village.
Location and Plane Spotting
Kněževes lies above the Únětický potok stream on the Prague Plateau, about 10 km from Prague and directly on the boundary of the grounds of Prague-Ruzyně International Airport. The Únětický potok originates in Kněževes u Prahy. This means that Kněževes’s location can be described in terms of both the stream and the plateau, as well as its approximate distance from Prague.
The spotting platform near Kněževes is a place to watch aircraft. It can be reached on foot via an unpaved gravel path from the adjacent Na Staré silnici road. Parking is about 100 metres from the platform. Kněževes can also be reached by bus. The type of path and approximate distance to parking provide practical guidance for getting there.
Baroque Buildings and Their Details
The Baroque gate at Na Slovance belongs to a late Baroque farmstead at No. 36. It has a split triangular gable and a half-length figure of Saint John of Nepomuk. Another building is the late Baroque bell tower at Na Slovance, dating from 1802. The gate’s gable and figure draw attention to its architectural details, while the bell tower’s construction date is specified precisely.
A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is also among the historical features of Kněževes. It dates from approximately the second half of the 18th century. The saint is thus depicted both as a half-length figure on the Baroque gate and in a statue of his own.
The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1736 with funds from the Jesuits’ St. Wenceslas Seminary in Prague. It was extended and restored in 1882, when it acquired its present-day pseudo-Romanesque appearance. During restoration work in 2014, wall paintings dating from 1904 were discovered and restored. The chapel’s construction, later alterations, and paintings therefore reflect several clearly dated stages in its history.
Finds, Festival, and Historical Context
Archaeological finds attest to traces in Kněževes from the Neolithic period, the Únětice culture, and the 8th to 9th centuries. The fortress of Kněževes was first mentioned in 1383 and no longer existed by 1575. Together, these dates show that the village’s history extends far beyond its surviving buildings.
The annual Svatováclavské posvícení adds a recurring festive occasion to the historical monuments. Alongside the buildings and archaeological finds, it offers another way to explore the village’s history.
If you are looking for a hotel in Knezeves, you can choose how to explore the village based on your interests: the spotting platform offers a clear focus on plane spotting, while the buildings, archaeological finds, and festival put the village’s history in the foreground. This brings together a well-defined theme of observation and a historical focus.
