Hiking routes, the Čížovka lookout tower, Koupaliště Kněžmost and historic buildings provide concrete starting points for planning a stay. For the routes, distance and destination are especially helpful when comparing options; the landscape and architectural style are the focus when it comes to the views and local history.

Hiking and cycling routes by distance and destination

The “Orientační hra” around Kněžmost is aimed at runners and hikers and includes two routes: 11 km and 18 km. With a difference of 7 km, the two distances provide a clear measure of the route lengths: the 11 km route is the shorter option, while the 18 km route is the longer one.

The “Historické putování s Pannou klíčnicí” follows the yellow-marked hiking trail through Lesopark Důně to Valečov Castle. The route is about 4 km long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The “Mokré putování s vodníkem Škebličkou” is about 3 km long and leads to the ponds at Suhrovice and Drhleny; this route can also be completed on foot or by bicycle. The second route is about one kilometre shorter. The destinations also differ: one route focuses on Valečov Castle, the other on the ponds.

Planning for views and swimming

The Čížovka lookout tower is in the village district of Čížovka in the municipality of Kněžmost, in the Central Bohemian Region. It stands on the boundary of the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area and within the Český ráj Geopark. The almost 40-metre-high, pyramid-shaped lookout tower offers views of the surrounding landscape. The location therefore has two distinct designations: it lies on the boundary of the protected landscape area and within the geopark.

Koupaliště Kněžmost has an unheated outdoor pool with a circular entrance and a mushroom-shaped water sprinkler. There is also a children’s paddling pool with a massage jet and a lawn for sunbathing. The “unheated” detail is especially relevant when planning a swim if heated water is important to you. Facilities may change, so check the municipality’s current information before your visit if you plan to go to the pool.

Church architecture and local history

The parish church of “sv. Františka Serafinského” was consecrated on 3 September 1843. It is a single-nave, oriented building with a three-sided closed presbytery and a Latin-cross ground plan. The details describe different aspects of its architecture: the single-nave structure, the shape of the ground plan and the form of the presbytery’s end.

The rich interior includes valuable Renaissance and Baroque tombstones of former estate owners and a church dignitary. Significant heraldic and epigraphic monuments add to the furnishings. These terms refer to different kinds of historical evidence: tombstones, on the one hand, and regional monuments bearing coats of arms and inscriptions, on the other.

The town hall also offers a tangible reference point for the history of local architecture. Built in 1827 in the Empire style, it retains original Baroque vaults with lunettes. The building thus combines the Empire style with surviving Baroque vault elements.
