Kokorinsky Dul: Hiking, Sandstone and Kokořín Castle
Accommodation in Kokorinsky Dul
When visiting Kokorinsky Dul, marked trails, a protected valley landscape and striking sandstone formations are the main features. In the Kokořínský Důl Nature Reserve, a gorge-like valley shapes the landscape, through which the Pšovka stream flows. The area was designated a nature reserve in 1953. Nature, hiking and geological features therefore give the destination a clear focus.
Valley and Sandstone Formations
The Kokořínské Pokličky are rock towers made of medium- to coarse-grained sandstones of the Jizera Suite. They are capped by a resistant layer of iron-rich sandstone to conglomerate; the formations were created by the selective weathering of the sandstones. Some of the rock formations reach heights of up to 12 metres.
Their geological formation is directly linked to their striking shapes: composition, the resistant caprock and selective weathering are all connected. If you are interested in landforms, you can take in both the silhouette of the rocks and their geological structure. This makes the Kokořínské Pokličky a specific focus for nature and geology enthusiasts. A short climb up wooden steps leads from the Kokořínské Pokličky starting point; at the top, there are lovely views. So, as well as the geological formations, a specific stretch of trail is also part of planning your visit.
Marked Trails and Routes
The red-marked Máchova Trail runs the entire length of Kokořínský Důl. Other marked hiking trails cross it or join it. For planning purposes, these are different kinds of route connections: the Máchova Trail is marked along its entire length, while other trails join or cross it.
A visitor guide from 2011, updated in March 2012, gives the Kokořínský důl nature trail an approximate length of 7 km and 10 stations. Most sections are also suitable for cyclists. If you are planning a current visit, it is advisable to check the route in advance.
Different criteria can help you choose between these route details: the Máchova Trail is described by its extent through Kokořínský Důl, while the nature trail’s length and number of stations give you an idea of its scale. This allows you to consider the route and its approximate length separately.
Kokořín Castle and Getting There
Kokořín Castle is located in Kokořínský Důl, in the municipality of Kokořín, in the Central Bohemian Region and in the Mělník District. It has been protected as a national cultural monument since 1 January 2002. As a building with designated protected status, it adds a cultural dimension to the natural and geological features and expands the destination’s profile with a specific landmark.
The walk from the last car park below the castle to the castle is just under one kilometre. Parking conditions may change, so check them before you travel.
