Konárovice: Church, Castle and the History of Winegrowing
Accommodation in Konárovice
Several themes come together when planning a trip to Konárovice: local and architectural history, a long tradition of winegrowing, and activities in the surrounding mixed forests. The historic buildings vary in form, from the protected church complex and Marian column to the four-winged castle. For time outdoors, options include walks, cycling tours and, in particular, mushroom picking.
Church, Chapel and Marian Column
The Parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is located in Konárovice. The protected church complex includes a tower, a mortuary, an enclosing wall with two gates, and a niche chapel.
At the southeastern edge of Konárovice, the chapel containing the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands elevated beside the road. The chapel contains a life-size sandstone statue, whose pedestal bears an inscription dated 1764.
The Marian column in Konárovice is a different type of structure: it is an octagonal stone column topped by a statue of the Madonna. The coats of arms of the Harrach and Lobkowicz families appear on its shaft. The two figures are clearly distinct: Saint John of Nepomuk belongs to the chapel, while the Madonna belongs to the Marian column. A religious figure inside a chapel and a figure atop a column thus stand side by side as different forms.
The Castle and Local History
Konárovice Castle is a four-winged building with a mansard roof; the Harrach family coat of arms is above the entrance. It is listed under number 20777/2–794 in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. The architectural description and the listing provide two different ways of classifying the castle: one describes its form, while the other records its status as a cultural monument.
A building’s former use is also part of local history: the Baroque almshouse on Konárovice village square was in operation from 1667 to 1872.
Winegrowing near Konárovice
Winegrowing on the sunny southern slopes near Konárovice is another strand of the area’s history. Its history dates back to the second half of the 14th century, and written evidence confirms cultivation in 1588. The Zadní Zájezd vineyard site was replanted in early 2019. The long history of winegrowing and this specific later replanting thus provide two points of reference in time.
Activities in the Mixed Forests
The mixed forests around Konárovice are suitable for walks and cycling tours, and especially for mushroom picking. The activities differ in focus when planning: walking and cycling are ways to get moving through the forests, while the particularly highlighted activity of mushroom picking makes the forest itself the focus.
