Kosořice: River Landscape, Monuments and Village Festival
Accommodation in Kosořice
Kosořice brings together a river landscape, local history and a recurring village festival. The Vlkava flows through the centre, landscaped green spaces have been created around Kosořický rybník, and the “Pálení čarodějnic” takes place on the last day of April. If you are planning a hotel stay, these different points of interest can help you weigh up your interests and preferred travel dates.
The river and landscaped pond surroundings
The Vlkava flows through the centre of Kosořice. Another feature of the local landscape is Kosořický rybník: the municipality has created landscaped green spaces on the dam and around the pond. Nearby, the area offers a pleasant setting for relaxation. The local scenery thus includes both the river running through the centre and landscaped green spaces by the pond.
Monuments and local history
A chapel stands in Kosořice’s village square, with a memorial plaque to those who fell in the First World War and a bust of T. G. Masaryk. By the bridge over the Vlkava stands the listed statue of St. John of Nepomuk. It dates from 1794 and was restored in 1949, 1997 and 2021. The statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary dates from 1883.
Crosses also tell the story of the village, each with a different background. In 1867, residents of Kosořice erected a cross by a bridge, following the 1866 war and a devastating cholera epidemic. The cross near Štěpánových was commissioned by the Štěpán family; their farmstead had stood there since the end of the 18th century. A farmstead later took on a Baroque appearance under Countess Eleonora von Waldstein.
The former fortress is another part of the area’s older history. Its remains were already lost in the 18th century. A farmyard near Močický rybník is thought to have been its location. The fact that this is only a supposition matters when considering this historical connection: the site of the fortress is not confirmed.
The recurring Pálení čarodějnic
Kosořice’s “Pálení čarodějnic” takes place on the last day of April in the forest park by the sports ground near the pond. A children’s lantern procession goes from the fire station to the large bonfire. The event also includes traditional competitions for young children and roasting sausages. If this festival is the reason for your trip, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
Getting there and planning a hike
The railway station in Voděrady is about 2 km from the centre of Kosořice. If you plan to travel via Voděrady, check the timetable for your chosen travel date. For hiking, it is also important to note that no marked KČT hiking trail passes through Kosořice. As routes may change, check the current situation before planning.
