As a travel destination, Kostelec Nad Cernými Lesy brings together several distinct themes: ceramics, castle history, brewing heritage and educational trails. When choosing a hotel destination based on your travel interests, it helps to look at these different highlights rather than focus on a single keyword. Here, an extensive ceramics collection, courses open to the public, historic architecture and clearly described educational trails sit side by side.

Ceramics: Collection and Craft

The Muzeum keramiky displays a collection by Michaela Třeštík and Jana Novák featuring more than 1,300 ceramic pieces. This makes the collection a clear highlight for anyone with a particular interest in ceramics. The Vondráčkova továrna ceramics workshop offers a different approach: its newly established workshop, open to the public, offers courses teaching how to work with ceramic clay, throw pots on a wheel and glaze them. The difference lies in the focus: the collection features more than 1,300 pieces, while the courses focus on practical steps for working with clay. Course availability may change.

Castle and Brewing Heritage

Kostelec Nad Cernými Lesy Castle was built as a Renaissance castle on the site of a 13th-century royal castle and later redesigned in the Baroque style. This progression from castle site to Renaissance building and later Baroque redesign offers a clear perspective on architectural history. The Černokostelecký pivovar offers a different historical focus: its complex is an exceptionally well-preserved ensemble of industrial architecture, with unique technology dating from the First Republic period.

The National Museum of Brewing is housed in the unique, authentic spaces of Kostelec Nad Cernými Lesy’s historic brewery, malt house and malt mill. In this way, castle history and industrial architecture offer distinct historical perspectives. The Černokostelecký pivovar also offers beers from various Czech microbreweries; the selection may change.

Events and Educational Trails

Keramický den is held regularly on the last Saturday in May. Two educational trails add specific details about their length and learning content to the range of things to see and do in the town. Opened in 2024, the Lesárium educational trail is 300 metres long and has 15 interactive features; details may change when the exhibition is updated. The educational trail on wetland habitats at the FLD Arboretum near Kostelec Nad Cernými Lesy teaches visitors about different models of protected wetland habitats at ten stations, with a focus on woody plants.

The two educational trails can be distinguished by their different features: the Lesárium trail has a stated length and number of interactive features, while the wetland trail specifies the number of stations and its subject focus. This helps distinguish the trails by their described approach to learning without treating their content as the same.

Planning Around the Occasion and Your Interests

For planning purposes, the event and the courses differ in timing: Keramický den takes place regularly in May, while course availability may change. So if you would like to plan your trip around one of these, check the date for the relevant year or current course availability.
