Kouřim brings together attractions that can be explored in different ways during a stay: folk architecture, the city’s history, and traces of early settlement. The open-air museum offers a glimpse of various regional building traditions. In the town, museums, the Church of St. Stephen, and the Prague Gate complement the focus on cultural history. To the east, Stará Kouřim offers a different perspective on the landscape and the area’s long history.

Folk Architecture and Crafts

The Muzeum lidových staveb v Kouřimi is the only open-air museum in the Czech Republic with a nationwide focus. It allows visitors to directly compare various regional types of folk architecture from the 17th to the 19th century. The museum includes 14 larger residential and farm buildings, as well as several smaller monuments. This makes it possible to plan your visit around different types of buildings and their regional construction styles, rather than looking at just one house.

The open-air museum hosts numerous folk culture and other accompanying programmes throughout the year. It also regularly holds one-day courses in traditional crafts, where you can learn practical skills and take home a souvenir you made yourself. As individual programmes and courses have their own dates, it is a good idea to check the events calendar before your trip. There is a car and bus parking area in front of the entrance; if you are arriving in a large vehicle, it is best to check local information.

Museums and Architectural History in Kouřim

The Muzeum Kouřimska is housed in the historic Old Town Hall and documents the history of Kouřim and its immediate surroundings. Its permanent exhibition is open year-round, while the temporary exhibitions are renewed three times a year. A long-term archaeological exhibition focuses on the early medieval Hradiště Stará Kouřim. Before your visit, check whether this exhibition will be on display at that time. This will help you choose between the broader history of the town and region and the archaeological theme.

The Church of St. Stephen is considered one of the most significant examples of early Gothic architecture in Europe. A distinctive architectural and artistic feature is the Crypt of St. Catherine, with its star-vaulted octagonal ceiling and early 15th-century wall paintings. The Baroque Chapel of Panny Marie Pomocné was built as a pentagonal chapel between 1724 and 1727, based on a design by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. Its interior is not open to visitors. Of Kouřim’s five former entrance gates, the Prague Gate is the only one that has survived; it is also considered one of the best-preserved monuments of its kind in Central Europe.

Stará Kouřim and Hiking Options

About one kilometre east of Kouřim, Stará Kouřim lies on an elevated gneiss outcrop above a bend in the Výrovka River. Its steep slopes reach up to 60 metres. The hill was inhabited from the late Stone Age through the early Middle Ages. The Stará Kouřim nature trail provides further information about Hradiště Stará Kouřim. Lechův kámen, a gneiss rock, lies along this trail near the hillfort.

For a hike with published details, there is the route “Okolo Kouřimi po stopách prvních Slovanů.” It starts and ends in Kouřim, is 4.6 kilometres long, and takes about 1.5 hours. The approximate duration can help you plan your time; also check current trail conditions before setting out. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your stay: a museum visit centred on architecture and crafts, the town’s architectural history, or a hike with a set distance and estimated duration.
