Lochovice in the Litavka Valley

Lochovice lies in the Litavka Valley. Lochovice Castle is a four-winged building from the late Renaissance. It was built on the site of an earlier fortress; the castle was later rebuilt.

The castle’s architectural history therefore extends from the earlier fortress through the late Renaissance building to the later alterations. Today, the castle is protected as a cultural monument. Its history also remains connected with the archaeological find area at the castle, where confirmed or well-founded suspected archaeological finds are located.

Culture

Lochovice Castle is protected as a cultural monument. Its castle grounds include a park, gardens, and a pond. The entrance garden of the castle, located to the north, is called Šance. It was laid out on the site of the original fortifications.

At Lochovice Castle, the archaeological find area contains confirmed or well-founded suspected archaeological finds. Lochovice Castle is open to the public only in connection with one-off cultural events.

The name Šance thus preserves the connection between the present-day entrance garden and the original fortifications. The castle, park, gardens, and pond make up the castle grounds, while public access to the castle is restricted to one-off cultural events.

History

The present-day Church of St. Andrew is Baroque and dates from 1654. The earlier church was Gothic and dedicated to Saint Stanislaus. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War.

The building and its history thus distinguish between the present-day Baroque church, the earlier Gothic church, and the destruction during the Thirty Years’ War. The Church of St. Andrew stands on a lawn in the western part of Lochovice Square. South of the church’s presbytery stands a sandstone column with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The healing spring of the former spa in Lochovice is still located beside a chapel on the grounds of Domov Lochovice. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built at the healing spring in 1757–1758.

The healing spring thus connects the former spa operation with the chapel that still exists and its construction period from 1757 to 1758. The sandstone column at the church and the chapel at the healing spring each refer to the Virgin Mary, but they are located in different places in Lochovice.

Geographical Setting

The Na Stráži fortification is an archaeological site on a spur above the right bank of the Litavka. It lies on the southern edge of Lochovice. Located between the Litavka and the road to Lhotka, the fortification covers approximately seven hectares. It consisted of three parts.

Its location is therefore described both by its position on the right bank of the Litavka and by the southern edge of the settlement and the road to Lhotka. The fortification lies on a spur and covers approximately seven hectares; its former layout consisted of three parts.

Nature and Trails

The Lochovická Třicítka starts in front of Lochovice railway station. From Lochovice, the circular trail and educational trail “Z Jinec na Olymp Brd” can be used. The nearby forests on Plešivec, Ostrý, and in Koncipudy offer opportunities for pleasant walks.
