Loukovec: Culture, Glass and the Jizera

Loukovec lies on a ridge running from Svijany to the right bank of the Jizera. The village combines ecclesiastical art, historical building phases, glassmaking and bodies of water into several distinct themes. This makes it possible to structure a visit according to interests without mixing up the different sides of Loukovec.

Culture

In the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Loukovec, the wooden high altar bears life-size statues of Saint Adalbert and Saint Procopius. The church is accessible by prior arrangement. The furnishings and access arrangements therefore belong to two different aspects of a visit: the altar represents the art-historical detail, while the prior arrangement describes the organisational framework.

History

The former Gothic fortress in Loukovec was converted into a Renaissance residence around 1600. The residence that developed from this former Gothic fortress was remodelled in the Baroque style at the end of the 17th century. This building therefore reveals Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque influences in succession.

The name of the Hradec farmstead also points to an earlier period: it suggests that a hillfort once stood there. The building history of the residence and this reference to Hradec form two different historical points of reference within Loukovec.

Glassmaking

In Hubálov, the Urbanglass workshop offers guided tours with production demonstrations and workshops for making your own glass items. The Urbanglass family gallery at Hubálov 21, Loukovec, offers glass presentations, live glassmaking demonstrations and guided tours by prior arrangement throughout the year. The presentations and demonstrations offered year-round can thus be distinguished in terms of timing from guided tours arranged in advance.

The glass studio of Karel and Eva Urban in Hubálov makes nativity figures, classic table figures, souvenirs, gifts, specially blown figures and glass beads. The workshop offerings listed thus range from observed production and making your own glass items to specific glass objects and gift items. Guided tours, demonstrations, workshops and studio products represent different ways of engaging with the craft. The formats can therefore be clearly distinguished: a guided tour focuses on the workshop process, a demonstration on production, a workshop on creating something yourself, and the studio on finished glassworks. In this way, observing, participating and choosing stand alongside one another as separate visitor interests.

Water

The JIZERA 6 fishing district begins at the weir of the Hubálov hydroelectric power station in the cadastral area of Loukovec. The Hubálovské Ponds in the cadastral area of Loukovec cover 0.6 ha. The fishing district, weir, ponds and area figure are separate features: they describe neither the same type of body of water nor the same spatial function.

Getting there

According to the timetable for the period from 15 September to 15 November 2025, regional bus route 733 connected Turnov with Mnichovo Hradiště and served Loukovec as well as the Loukovec, Hubálov stop. For this period, the timetable lists Turnov and Mnichovo Hradiště as connection points and Loukovec and Loukovec, Hubálov as served stops.
