Lubná combines a gently rolling agricultural landscape with a distinctive historic village center. It is also home to the Planetary Path, a scale model of the solar system, a Paleolithic archaeological site, and traces of mining. These varied themes offer several starting points for planning your trip: the landscape, local history, and a specific walking route.

Landscape and village scene

Lubná lies in a gently rolling agricultural landscape between the valley of the Rakovnický potok to the north and Senecká hora to the south. The Černý potok rises within the area of Lubná and is a right-bank tributary of the Rakovnický potok. These two watercourses and the landscape between the valley and the ridge define the village’s geographical setting.

In the historic center, gable-fronted houses and farmsteads are uniquely preserved around a large, oval central village square. The square is the focal point of this village scene; the homes and farmsteads reflect its rural character.

History and architecture

The earliest written reference names Lubná in 1057 as “Luben.” Its prehistoric significance includes a Paleolithic settlement, making Lubná one of the most important Gravettian sites in Czech territory. The village’s history therefore extends far beyond the written record.

The discovery of coal in the 19th century, followed several decades later by the discovery of slate and their gradual extraction, shaped Lubná’s development. The Sv. Rocha shaft was opened in 1821 as the first shaft. St. George’s Church represents another historical layer: this rural church has Late Baroque elements and was built on the site of a medieval church dating from the 14th century.

Planetary Path

The Planetary Path explores the solar system at a scale of 1:1 billion. Twelve stations with information boards form the model; the distances between the celestial bodies shown are also represented to scale as walking distances between the stations. The scale therefore applies not only to the size of the celestial bodies, but also to the distances between them. In this way, the route combines astronomical information with the spatial experience of a walk.
