Benátky nad Jizerou: Castle, Museum and Nature
Accommodation in Benátky nad Jizerou
Benátky nad Jizerou offers a range of ways to spend your stay: the history of its castle and museum, churches from different periods, and protected landscapes along the Jizera. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture and nature separately and choose the subjects that suit the time you have available.
Castle, churches and memories of Smetana
Benátky nad Jizerou Castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the ruins of a monastery belonging to the Cyriac Order. The castle church of Narození Panny Marie is older: it was consecrated on 25 February 1349 and was originally Early Gothic. A gallery connects the church to the castle, and its tower serves as a lookout. The building history thus links the town’s early ecclesiastical past with the later castle complex.
The church of sv. Máří Magdaleny also reflects several stages of construction. It was built between 1561 and 1570 in the Late Gothic style and restored in the Baroque style in 1664, particularly on the façade and in the interiors. Figurative sgraffito was added to the east side of the castle in 1599. These dates and styles offer a concrete starting point if you are interested in the town’s architectural history.
The Muzeum Benátecka is housed in the castle. Its themes include an interactive exhibition about Tycho Brahe and prehistoric and medieval astronomy. The young musician Bedřich Smetana’s time in Benátky nad Jizerou from 1844 to 1847 is commemorated in several places: with a plaque at the castle entrance, a memorial room opened in the museum in 1957, and a monument unveiled in the upper part of the castle park in 1974. Part of the castle cellars is used for cultural and social events.
The Jizera landscape and protected nature
The Stará Jizera Natural Monument includes oxbow lakes in a meander of the Jizera between the Dražice district and the municipality of Horky nad Jizerou. The protected area includes wetlands and meadows dotted with large oak trees. The complex is considered one of the last examples of a floodplain ecosystem along the Jizera. This offers a different focus from the history of the castle and churches: here, the river landscape and habitats take centre stage.
The Slepeč Natural Monument lies partly within the cadastral territories of Benátky nad Jizerou and Kochánky. It covers a total area of 7.75 hectares; it is protected in particular for the presence of the lady’s slipper orchid, which is considered critically endangered in the Jizera area. The castle vineyards are also part of the town’s landscape history: they lie on sunny south-eastern slopes above the Jizera, on rocky ground that provided favourable conditions for growing grapes. The Žitava branch of the Way of St James enters the cadastral territory of Benátky nad Jizerou by Lake Měsíc; the lake is part of the Stará Jizera Natural Monument.
