Nezabudice offers a connection with nature along the Berounka and several distinct cultural themes. The Nezabudické skály Nature Reserve is known for its rocky slopes and rich reptile fauna; the Church of St. Lawrence, the Jaroslav Franěk Memorial Room, and the Nezabudický Mill offer other points of interest. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether natural landscapes, architectural history, or the connections to Jaroslav Franěk and Ota Pavel best match your interests.

Rocky Landscapes and Hiking Trails

The Nezabudické skály Nature Reserve lies on a steep south-facing slope above the Berounka. It protects rocky slopes with a very rich reptile fauna, including European green lizards and smooth snakes. The setting thus combines a specific hillside location with distinctive wildlife. Access to the area is restricted to marked hiking trails along the northern boundary and the road along the southern boundary. Take these access points into account when planning and check trail conditions locally.

Nezabudice has a red-marked KČT hiking trail, also known as the Way of St. James. If you are planning a hike, note both details: the red markings and the name Way of St. James.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of St. Lawrence occupies a prominent position above the center of Nezabudice, on a low rise beside a former small cemetery. The church is a single-nave building. The presbytery, or chancel, is polygonal and has a three-sided termination; there is also a two-storey western tower. The nave, chancel termination, and tower can therefore be distinguished as three separate parts of the building’s design.

The original Gothic pointed-arch window retains its roughly executed two-part stone tracery, although the window is now bricked up. To understand this detail, both its original Gothic form and its current structural condition are important.

Memory, Literature, and Getting There

The Jaroslav Franěk Memorial Room is dedicated to Jaroslav Franěk, a legionnaire and resistance fighter born in Nezabudice. U Rozvědčíka is now a cult tourist inn; Franěk opened it in 1934. The two connections to Franěk are distinct: the memorial is dedicated to him, while the inn’s history is tied to his role as its founder.

The Nezabudický Mill is a Baroque mill complex with a core dating from the 17th to 18th centuries, and is known from the stories of writer Ota Pavel. Two cultural perspectives converge at the mill: Baroque architecture and literary renown. The historical periods also differ: the mill’s core dates from the 17th to 18th centuries, U Rozvědčíka opened in 1934, and the church preserves an original Gothic window.

The Ota Pavel ferry crosses the Berounka from Luh below Branov to Nezabudice. Its service may vary by season; check the timetable if you would like to include the crossing in your journey.
