Nymburk District: Elbe floodplains, folk culture and history
Accommodation in Nymburk District
In Nymburk District, the flat Elbe floodplain landscape meets cultural attractions ranging from rural architecture to medieval history. Nature and historic buildings offer different highlights for your trip.
Elbe floodplains, bog and dune grassland
Libický luh lies in the flat Elbe floodplain southeast of the confluence of the Elbe and Cidlina rivers. Another natural area is Hrabanovská černava, a National Natural Monument. This protected Polabí bog comprises wetland and meadow communities and provides a habitat for rare species.
Písečný přesyp u Píst protects open continental dune grassland. One of its distinctive features is its shifting ground: it is one of the few places in Czechia where the substrate is still clearly moving. Thus, alongside the Elbe floodplains and wetlands, the natural landscape also includes dune grassland with its own distinctive geological character.
Museums and historic buildings
Polabské národopisné muzeum Přerov nad Labem is one of Europe’s oldest regional open-air museums; its origins date back to 1895. It comprises almost 40 examples of folk architecture, including nine houses, seven granaries and four barns. The furnished interiors show village life in the Polabí region from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. The different buildings and rooms bring a long period of rural everyday history to life.
Vlastivědné muzeum Nymburk focuses on the nature of the Polabí region, prehistoric archaeology and the history of Nymburk. In Poděbrady, Památník krále Jiřího z Poděbrad interprets the history of the 14th and 15th centuries. It is located in the oldest part of the medieval castle; Gothic wall paintings and hundreds of exhibits explore themes from this period.
Libice nad Cidlinou also connects history with a specific site: the Slavník stronghold is a National Cultural Monument. Slavník built a fortified complex there with a mint, a stone church and a princely palace. Other National Cultural Monuments include the crematorium in Nymburk and the hydroelectric power station in Poděbrady.
