Předboj: Monuments, Archaeology and Recreation
Accommodation in Předboj
Předboj can be viewed from several perspectives: commemorative and architectural history, archaeological traces, geology and recreation are all among the themes of the village. If you are looking for a hotel in Předboj, this distinction can help you choose a destination that suits the purpose of your trip. The time spans range from the Cretaceous period and the hillfort period to monuments whose dates extend from around 1800 to their restoration in 2021. You will encounter different historical and present-day connections that can usefully be considered separately.
Commemorative and Architectural History
The Husův pomník was erected in 1915 to mark the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus’s execution. The original relief was stolen in 2015; a new relief featuring a portrait of Jan Hus was added in 2021. The years have different roles: 1915 marks the monument’s erection and the occasion it commemorated, while 2021 marks the later addition of the new relief. This makes it possible to understand the monument’s history both through its original dedication and through the change to its relief.
Another historical trace is the Kaplička, a niche chapel on the outskirts of Předboj, on the road toward Prague. It dates from around 1800. The Křížek was built in 1864 right next to the Zvonička. Both were fully restored in 2021 as part of the park’s redesign, and a new bell was installed at the Zvonička. The dates distinguish an older chapel, a cross built later, and the more recent restoration of the cross and bell. The architectural history is therefore not a single period, but a series of specific stages.
Tvrz and Archaeological Traces
The Tvrz in Předboj was probably built in the 14th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1383. Since 1958, it has been listed as a cultural monument under number 46191/2-4143. The probable date of construction and the first written mention are not the same: one is a tentative dating, while the other is a recorded year. It is also important to set expectations about the site: the Tvrz is not a surviving ruin. Its last remains were destroyed in 1996 during the reconstruction of the buildings of the former manor farm.
Předboj is classified as a significant archaeological site in category ÚAN I. Archaeological finds in the western part of the village, by a stream flowing through Předboj, and near the former Tvrz provide evidence of settlement as early as the hillfort period. Thus, alongside the written mention of the Tvrz, there are indications of settlement in the village that reach much further back in time. If you are interested in early history, this distinction between written records and archaeological classification offers a helpful temporal framework.
Geology and Places for Recreation
Natural history offers a different timescale from that of the monuments. The fossil-rich Korycany layers in Předboj formed from deposits of a former shallow sea during the Cretaceous period. A fossil found in the cadastral area of Předboj is estimated to be 88 million years old. The layers describe the former depositional environment, while the fossil’s estimated age provides a distinct natural-history context. Together, they offer a specific geological perspective on Předboj without limiting the village’s history to its monuments.
Two different places are mentioned for recreation in Předboj. The Velký předbojský rybník is a popular recreational spot. The Sportovní areál Západní Stráň is a modern public space that brings together sport, recreation and peace and quiet. The pond is therefore a recreational spot, while the sports complex combines several purposes in a public space. This distinction can help you consider the destination’s recreational side alongside its historical and geological themes.
Předboj brings these themes together without requiring the same kind of stay or interests.
