Polní Voděrady can be explored through several specific themes: its first historical mention, historic buildings, individual cultural monuments, and a cycling route that a 2022 regional tourism description presents as a loop through the village. The dates relate to different objects and events. You can therefore explore local history, art and cycling as separate focuses of your trip.

Local History and Historic Buildings

Polní Voděrady is first mentioned in 1088 as a possession of the Vyšehrad Chapter. This date marks the first mention of the village. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and the castle together form one of the municipality’s historic architectural landmarks. For orientation, these are two distinct points of reference: the village’s early history and the buildings that define it today. The 1088 mention does not date the present-day buildings.

Today’s Polní Voděrady Castle is a Neoclassical building erected at a new site in 1810–1811. The description “a new building at a new site” distinguishes its construction history from the first written mention of the village. Neoclassicism identifies the castle’s style, while 1810–1811 indicates when it was built. Together with the church, it is one of the municipality’s historic architectural landmarks.

Cultural Monuments in the Village

Another specific cultural monument is the statue of Saint Francis Xavier. It is a Baroque sandstone sculpture dating from 1736–1739. Its style, material and period can therefore be distinguished: Baroque is its stylistic classification, sandstone is its material, and the dates indicate the period in which it was made. The statue thus belongs to a different historical context from the Neoclassical castle.

The statue stands on the northeastern edge of the village, on the road to Kolín, and is freely accessible. Check its accessibility again before your visit. The cemetery beside the church is still in use and contains several notable gravestones from the second half of the 19th century. Here, the cemetery’s continued use and gravestones from a clearly specified period sit side by side—offering a distinct perspective on local history alongside the buildings and the statue.

Only the brewery cellar remains of the former brewery building. It was renovated and incorporated into the castle park during the castle’s reconstruction from 2014 to 2016. The cellar is not accessible. The dates refer to its renovation, distinguishing this part of local history from the construction period of today’s castle.

Cycling Route and Landscape

A regional tourism description from 2022 presents the loop route “Cyklovýlet za Labskými vyhlídkami a údolím Polepky” (Cycling Trip to the Elbe Viewpoints and the Polepka Valley); its route passes through Polní Voděrady. The loop is a specific cycling option to consider when planning your trip, alongside the historical sites. Road conditions and practical rideability may change, so check the current route and conditions before setting out.

Agricultural land makes up most of the cadastral area of Polní Voděrady; forests, meadows and grassland are uncommon there. If landscape character is a factor in your choice of destination, this land use provides a specific guide: the area as a whole is predominantly agricultural. This complements exploring the historic buildings and cultural monuments with an understanding of the landscape.
