Průhonice combines a landscaped valley with traces of several historical periods. For planning your trip, it helps to decide what interests you most: the park and its plant collections, or the castle and church history? The historical span reaches from the church’s consecration in 1187 to the pond system created in the early 18th century.

Parkland along the Botič

Průhonice Park was created in the Botič valley, combining native and introduced exotic tree species. The Hlavní vyhlídka leads from centuries-old oaks with rhododendrons growing beneath them, past meadow areas in the Botič valley and both main ponds, to the viewing terrace in the castle courtyard. Along this route, old trees, open meadows and bodies of water form distinct landscapes side by side.

The ponds also tell the story of how the area was landscaped: the Kaskáda sedmi Holských rybníků is a chain of seven ponds created at the beginning of the 18th century. The Gloriet observation tower stands on a rocky outcrop shaped by a meander of the Botič. The tower was reconstructed in 2010, restoring its function as a viewpoint. These features offer different points of interest: the pond chain reflects a historic landscape design, while Gloriet is a viewpoint in a striking location by the river meander.

Botanical collection and seasonal exhibitions

The Dendrologická zahrada Průhonice offers a different focus from the park’s valley landscape. It covers 72.8 hectares and contains nearly 10,000 plant taxa. The scale of the collection gives you another way to appreciate its botanical diversity. The garden opened to the public in 1991 and also hosts seasonal themed plant exhibitions. While the Hlavní vyhlídka brings together different landscape features along one route, the Dendrologická zahrada places greater emphasis on the diversity of plants. If you are planning a visit, check current visitor access and exhibition dates in advance.

Castle history and the oldest monument

Today’s Průhonický zámek was created through repeated alterations to an originally medieval Gothic castle complex. The access policy is important for planning your visit: the Průhonický zámek is not open to the public, with the exception of the exhibitions and visitor centre. Check this policy before your trip.

A distinct chapter in the site’s architectural history is the Romanesque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the oldest monument in the Průhonice castle grounds. It was consecrated in 1187. Gothic linear frescoes dating from the first half of the 14th century were discovered on its walls in 1890. The consecration and the frescoes therefore belong to different periods: the wall paintings are much younger than the church’s consecration, even though they were not discovered until the 19th century. For anyone interested in cultural history, the site brings together early architectural history and later medieval painting.
