Sazená offers two distinct themes for a trip: architectural history and aviation. The castle, water mill and Baroque bridge represent different historical architectural styles; at the airfield, you can enjoy supervised flying experiences or sightseeing flights along a named route. If you are looking for a hotel in Sazená, these differences can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Culture and Architectural History in Sazená

Sazená Castle was built around 1606 and later altered several times. The entrance and a balcony with stone baluster posts are among the features that remain from its Baroque appearance. Its building history and surviving details thus offer two perspectives: the construction date places the castle in its historical context, while the entrance and balcony show specific features of its Baroque appearance. Those interested in historic buildings can distinguish its development over time from its architectural details.

In the village center, a four-arched stone Baroque bridge spans the Červený stream, also known as the Bakovský. Casts of the sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk and the Calvary group stand on the bridge; the originals are in the vestibule of the museum in Velvary. The bridge thus combines a specific architectural form with casts of sculptures, while the originals are located elsewhere, at a named site.

The protected water mill complex includes the mill, a barn and an enclosed plot with a gate. The mill itself is a longitudinally oriented building with a mansard roof and richly articulated façades. A mansard roof has a broken profile, with a steeper lower roof slope; the term describes a feature of the building, not the entire complex. The barn, enclosed plot and gate are also part of the complex. This makes it possible to distinguish the features of the mill building from the other components of the protected site.

Flying Experiences and Directions to the Airfield

With “Pilotem na zkoušku,” participants at Sazená Airfield try flying an aircraft or helicopter themselves under the guidance of a flight instructor. The experience includes a pre-flight briefing and the flight. The offer therefore combines instruction with hands-on participation in piloting. Sightseeing flights by plane have a different focus: their route goes over Mělník Castle, Kokořín Castle and Liběchov Château, and ends back in Sazená.

You can distinguish between the two options by asking yourself a specific question: Would you like to try piloting under instruction, or does the set sequence of the named destinations matter most to you? Check the availability of your preferred flight experience again before your trip. To reach the airfield, take exit 18 from the D8 motorway, then travel via Nová Ves to road 608. Road conditions and signage may change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting off.

The Fortification Structure in Sazená

The fortification structure of the Sazená Fortress Museum is in the center of Sazená, northeast of Velvary. It is an atypical two-embrasure LO vz. 37 (A-1/24a/Z1) structure, built onto a public weighbridge. The structure and its surroundings have been restored to their original appearance from late September 1938. Its classification therefore depends both on its distinctive design and unusual addition, and on its precisely specified historical reference point. Along with the castle, bridge and mill, it broadens the range of architectural history in Sazená to include a fortification structure.
