Sibřina: History, Bell Towers and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Sibřina
Sibřina brings together key historical dates, archaeological traces and dated cultural evidence. For orientation, the location of each landmark matters: the neo-Gothic bell tower is in Sibřina; a protected cross and another bell tower stand in the village square in Stupice.
Historical Milestones
The first recorded mention of Sibřina dates from 1197. Before 1492, Sibřina, the manor farm and the rest of the estate came into the possession of Václav Tluksa of Vrábí, owner of the fortress in Dřevčice. In 1589, Sibřina was transferred to Jaroslav Smiřický of Smiřice and assigned to Kostelec nad Černými Lesy.
The dates serve different purposes: 1197 marks the first mention, “before 1492” places the earlier change of ownership within a timeframe, while 1589 dates the later event to a specific year. This makes it possible to follow the sequence without treating the two changes of ownership as a single event.
Bell Towers and the Cross
The neo-Gothic bell tower in Sibřina dates from the second half of the 19th century; the year 1867 is inscribed on it. The term neo-Gothic refers to its Gothic Revival style. The period places the tower in time, while 1867 is the year indicated on the structure.
A protected cross and a bell tower dating from 1826 stand in the village square in Stupice. The cross bears an inscription from 1826 that names P. Rautenkran and the community of Stupice. The protection status and inscription relate to the cross; the date 1826 also refers to the bell tower. They are two separate objects in the same village square.
Archaeological Traces in the Cadastral Area
Archaeological finds from the cadastral area of Sibřina attest to several Celtic settlements that were in use from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. This period extends well before the first recorded mention of the town. The dates, however, refer to different things: 1197 is the year Sibřina was mentioned, while the earlier centuries place the use of several settlements in the cadastral area in time.
The span from the 3rd to the 1st century BC describes several centuries of settlement use, not a single event. It therefore provides a different historical reference point from the years associated with the town’s mention, changes of ownership and architectural evidence.
Masopust as a Dated Event
The Masopust in Sibřina was announced for 14 February 2026 as its 25th edition. Meat dishes, pastries and traditional Masopust drinks were planned for this edition. Calling it the 25th edition identifies the event as part of an ongoing series; the announced offerings relate to this specific date. The Masopust thus sits alongside the longer-term historical and architectural points of reference as a dated event.
