Church art, farmstead architecture and mill history give Veletov a distinct cultural identity. When planning your trip, you can explore its religious furnishings, rural architectural styles and the history of the mill. These themes are complemented by the Námořní muzeum, which focuses on Czechoslovak maritime shipping, and a cycling route along the Labe.

Church of the Annunciation

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Annunciation dates from 1895 and was solemnly consecrated on 11 July 1897. The year of construction and the date of consecration mark different stages in the church’s history: one establishes when the church building was constructed, while the exact July date marks its consecration. Thus, both a specific year and an exact day are associated with the church.

Inside, the church preserves a unified set of furnishings from the late 19th century. It also features original wall paintings and stained-glass windows. Particularly noteworthy is the chancel window depicting the Annunciation to Mary: the subject echoes the church’s name and gives the window a clear thematic connection to the interior. The combination of unified furnishings and individual surviving details also makes the church a compelling subject for those interested in sacred art.

Farmsteads and Historic Architecture

Farmsteads Nos. 24, 7 and 37 represent different scales of rural architectural history. At Farmstead No. 24, the Late Baroque gateway dates from 1824 and is registered as an immovable cultural monument. Farmstead No. 7 features a masonry gateway with a wicket gate from the first third of the 19th century; both are also registered as immovable cultural monuments. The dates differ: an exact year is given for the gateway at No. 24, while the gateway and wicket gate at No. 7 are assigned a broader date range.

Farmstead No. 37 is a fully preserved Polabian farmstead dating from 1830 to 1840. It was restored in accordance with heritage-preservation standards in 2015–2016. The examples therefore range from a single Late Baroque gateway, through a gateway and wicket gate, to a fully preserved farmstead. The restoration adds a much later chapter to the older architectural history.

In the centre of Veletov, there is also a cast-iron cross on a plinth of Kutná Hora limestone. Erected in 1882 and restored in 2013, it stands beside the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The distinction is specific: the cross is beside the Church of the Visitation, while the Neo-Gothic Church of the Annunciation is a separate building.

The Mill and Waterways

The mill known as Veletovský mlýn is first mentioned in 1309. At that time, its owner, Milota of Choltice, sold it together with other properties and services to Sedlec Abbey. This historical episode links the mill to a specific transfer of ownership and the history of the abbey.

A 750-metre millrace leads to the mill. The approximately 1,300-metre-long tailrace meanders around Veletov and flows back into the Labe. The two waterways are easy to distinguish: the millrace leads to the mill, while the longer tailrace flows back to the Labe. Together, their differing lengths and courses offer a specific insight into how water is managed around the mill.

Museum and Cycling Route

The Námořní muzeum in Veletov is devoted to the history of Czechoslovak maritime shipping. This adds a maritime theme that clearly differs from the local church and farmstead architecture. Check the museum’s visiting arrangements before planning a visit.

A cycling route of regional significance runs along the Labe through the Veletov area. It is part of the main Czech cycling network and is heavily used. For cyclists, it offers a distinct point of interest, separate from the historic buildings and mill history.
