Veltrusy brings together a range of travel themes: Baroque architecture, a protected sacred building, a landscape park, and routes for walking or cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Veltrusy, you can plan your trip around whether cultural history or time outdoors is your priority. The sights and routes offer different experiences, so you can choose according to your interests.

Cultural History in Veltrusy

Construction of Veltrusy Chateau began in 1704; the chateau was designed as a spacious Baroque residence. Its original design is associated with the architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, although the original plans have not survived. In 2002, Veltrusy Chateau was declared a national cultural monument. The dates mark different milestones: 1704 marks the start of construction, while 2002 marks its later designation as a cultural monument.

Another protected cultural site is Kostel Narození sv. Jana Křtitele in Veltrusy. The sacred building has a Gothic presbytery and a surviving fragment of a figurative wall painting from the second half of the 14th century. Veltrusy therefore offers a glimpse of different historical periods: the Baroque residence and a sacred building with a Gothic architectural feature and medieval painting. If you include cultural history in your travel plans, these features offer two distinct architectural points of interest.

Landscape, Nature Conservation and Routes

Veltrusy Park is one of the five oldest landscape parks in the Czech Republic. It is freely accessible from dawn until dusk. Access conditions may change for safety or operational reasons, so check them before your visit. Fallow deer have been kept in the Veltrusy game reserve since 1802.

Nature conservation is also one of the site's themes. The Veltrusy Natural Monument protects the hermit beetle (Osmoderma barnabita) and the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), including their habitats. The focus here is on protecting the two beetle species and their habitats, distinct from the history of the landscape park as a separate area of interest. Visitors interested in nature and cultural heritage can therefore consider several different aspects when planning their trip.

Cycling Tour and Hiking Route

The guided cycling tour through the park leads to small park pavilions and various bridges over the Mlýnský potok, as well as to the alluvial forest and viewpoints overlooking fields, meadows and an orchard. As booking requirements may change, check the current conditions for the tour before planning.

The Six Bridges Hiking Route in Veltrusy follows the Mlýnská strouha, passing bridges and park pavilions. Trail conditions may change after weather events, so check the current situation before setting out. When choosing between the two routes, you can consider their different highlights: the cycling tour also includes the alluvial forest and views of fields, meadows and an orchard, while the hiking route follows the watercourse.

More Sights and Getting There

The artificial Veltrusy slalom channel offers another perspective on the area. It uses 350 metres of a former timber-raft passage at the Miřejovice weir. This figure refers to the section of the former passage used for the channel; its structural basis is therefore different from that of the historic buildings and routes.

Direct bus routes 370 and 372 run between Prague-Kobylisy and Kralupy nad Vltavou in both directions, stopping at Veltrusy. Check the current timetable before departure. You can include the bus connection in your travel plans and tailor your stay in Veltrusy to the cultural and landscape themes that interest you most.
