Local history across three points in time

The local history of Záhorí can be viewed at three widely separated points in time. On Müller’s map of 1720, the settlement is recorded as “Sadoly”; this is considered the oldest known reference to date. Jaroslav Schaller’s topography listed 14 houses in Zádolí in 1788. In 1848, František Palacký recorded 19 houses and 162 inhabitants there. The sequence therefore spans an early form of the name through to information about houses and population. The comparison is not just a matter of numbers: the year 1720 establishes the name, while the later entries make the number of houses tangible and, in 1848, also give the population figure. For a historical perspective, the focus thus shifts from an early reference to more specific information about the settlement.

Association history and war memorial

Cultural history, too, is associated with specific names. The amateur theatre association “Josef Kajetán Tyl” was founded in Zádolí in 1929. Its members established a library there with more than 300 volumes. The association’s founding and the library link theatre and reading in local history; the library is part of the association’s history as a contribution by its members. The war memorial offers a different perspective. It was created by local stonemason František Tabulka and unveiled in 1936. Local remembrance thus includes both a craftsman known by name and a specific year. The association’s history, the library and the memorial point to different aspects: community cultural work, reading and remembrance of the war dead.

Neighbourhood gathering and Christmas tree lighting

A community newsletter from January/February 2025 reports on a traditional neighbourhood gathering in October, where children could hollow out and carve pumpkins together with their parents. It also mentions a traditional Christmas tree lighting on 1 December, with Christmas carols and mulled wine. The two events differ in season and character: in October, the focus is on making things together with pumpkins; on 1 December, Christmas carols and mulled wine are part of the gathering described. If you are planning to travel specifically for an event, check the latest dates in advance.

Hiking trail and regional orientation

One specific route is named for hiking: the red-marked Sedlčany–Neveklov hiking trail passes through Zádolí. Check the current trail conditions and markings before setting out; both are part of planning your hike. Hiking tourism is also important in the wider area around Neveklov. Another practical detail concerns Neveklov: Benešov is the administrative centre, and the bus journey from Neveklov takes about half an hour. This is an approximate travel time; check the timetable for the day you are travelling. The two details answer different planning questions: the hiking trail describes a route through Zádolí, while the approximate journey time refers to the bus ride from Neveklov to Benešov.
