Zakopaná: Rock Landscape, Circular Trail and Viewpoint

The Příhrazské skály Nature Reserve has Zakopaná as one of its boundary points. Příhrazské skály lie between Dneboh, Olšina, Mužský, Příhrazy, Zakopaná and Srbsko and form a complex of rock cities with neovolcanic bodies. This spatial setting alone connects Zakopaná with a landscape in which various rock formations, forested areas and named places are closely interrelated.

Nature and Geography

The rock-city complex of Příhrazské skály consists of 178 towers and marginal massifs. The rock cities and neovolcanic bodies are therefore among the characteristic geological formations of the area in question, while the individual place names mark its extent across several municipalities and localities. In the municipal area of Branžež, to which Zakopaná belongs, pine forests grow on sandy ground. Numerous sandstone rocks are scattered throughout the surrounding romantic valleys.

A 2.5-kilometre-long and 3-metre-thick volcanic dike also runs through the area of Branžež and Zakopaná in a WSW–ENE direction. The length, thickness and course of this dike are just as much part of the landscape description as the pine forests on sandy soil and the sandstone rocks in the surrounding valleys. The geological connections thus extend from individual rock formations to a clearly described volcanic dike.

Trails and Viewpoints

The Zakopaná stop is considered a particularly suitable starting point for an excursion to Příhrazské skály. An approximately nine-kilometre circular trail begins in Zakopaná and leads via a detour to the ruins of Hynšta. The approximate length is retained, as is the route via the ruins. The basalt summit of Mužský offers views of the Krkonoše Mountains, known in Czech as Krkonoše.

The circular trail, the stop and the basalt summit represent three different points of connection within the described landscape: a named starting point, an approximately nine-kilometre route with a historical detour and a viewpoint overlooking the Krkonoše Mountains. Each of these references remains tied to the place mentioned in each case.

History

In the vicinity of Zakopaná, a monument on Mužský commemorates a battle fought there in 1866 during the Prussian-Austrian War. The historical reference is therefore located directly at one of the landscape points from whose basalt summit views of the Krkonoše Mountains can be enjoyed.

Water and Leisure

Komárovský rybník lies between Branžež, Zakopaná and Srbsko. Its surroundings are among the centres of tourism and offer opportunities for camping and water sports. Thus, alongside the rocks, forests, valleys and trails, a body of water with explicitly mentioned leisure activities is also part of the local references around Zakopaná.
