Zbečno: Folk Architecture, Local History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Zbečno
Zbečno between the Berounka and Křivoklátsko
Zbečno lies in the Berounka valley, in the Křivoklátská vrchovina and in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. Cultural history and trails through the countryside give the town different facets: you can explore traditional crafts and architectural history or choose one of the described routes according to its length and focus.
Those interested in the landscape can find information about the protected area, fauna, flora and forests on the Naučná stezka Brdatka. The Vodácká naučná stezka Berounka offers a different perspective: its 14 stops cover the river, local nature, history and notable figures. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in the subjects they focus on along the way.
Folk Architecture and Local History
Hamousův statek is one of the oldest publicly accessible monuments of folk architecture in Central Bohemia. Its exhibition introduces traditional crafts and the way of life on a rural farmstead. Rather than focusing on a single craft, it presents everyday life on a farm and the work that was part of it.
The farmstead also has a recurring tradition: homemade bread is baked in the old oven every Sunday. This makes a visit to Hamousův statek interesting also for travelers who, alongside the architecture, are looking for a firsthand glimpse of traditional crafts.
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin offers a glimpse into another chapter of Zbečno’s architectural history. It was built in the mid-14th century. After being damaged, the Gothic church was given Baroque façades and interiors during an extensive reconstruction in 1715. Its history thus combines a medieval foundation with a later, markedly influential rebuilding phase.
The Masaryk Bridge also tells the story of the town’s development: it spans the Berounka and dates from 1924–1925. Together with the history of the church, it provides another historical landmark, this time centered on the bridge and the river.
Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Theme
The Naučná stezka Brdatka is a seven-kilometer educational hiking trail of moderate difficulty. Its 17 information panels cover the protected area, as well as its fauna, flora and forests. The route includes the Gloriet viewing pavilion; one stop offers views of the Berounka valley and the panorama of the wooded Křivoklátsko hills.
The other described hike, Procházka přemyslovským hvozdem, runs for 7.5 kilometers from Křivoklát station to Zbečno station. It is also of moderate difficulty. By comparison, Brdatka is shorter and features information panels and the Gloriet; the other route is a point-to-point hike between two railway stations. These details help you compare different lengths and types of trail without assuming a walking time.
Train services are available on the Beroun–Rakovník railway line. Zbečno is also connected to the town of Kladno by a direct bus. Bus services and timetables may change, so check connections for your travel date before setting off.
