Bílé Poličany: Cycling Route and Cultural History
Accommodation in Bílé Poličany
Bílé Poličany has a cycling route that passes through the village; Vinice is a destination for an outing, and several cultural and historical details add to the character of the place. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on an outdoor excursion or on architectural and commemorative history. The cycling route can be assessed by its length and elevation gain; the park, chapels, and monuments offer other perspectives.
Cycling Route and Vinice
The 8 km Podzvičinska 4131 cycling route passes through Bílé Poličany and connects Maňovice with Zábřezí. The route has an elevation gain of about 120 m. These figures answer different planning questions: the length describes the route, and the elevation gain its ascent. Podzvičinska 4131 is part of a system of 23 marked routes that connect to existing cycling routes in the Královéhradecký Region. This makes it possible to view Bílé Poličany both in terms of the specific stretch through the village and as part of a marked route network.
Vinice is a destination for an outing. Vinice is easily reached on foot, including via the red-marked hiking trail. Today’s destination for an outing has neither a vineyard nor a restaurant. For planning purposes, this offers a choice between different ways of getting around: the cycling route as a route with stated key figures, and the footpath to a named hilltop destination.
Park and Local History
In the English-style park, the former music salon was converted into the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Beside the fountain stands a sandstone sculpture of a satyr. The park thus combines a change of use of a building with a standalone work of art; the two details point to different aspects of its design.
A historical episode dates to 1949: at the time, Bílé Poličany Castle belonged to Czechoslovak Radio. Established and aspiring employees of the broadcaster stayed there. The former chapel pavilion now serves mainly as a storage building.
Monuments and Small Details
A simple plague column bearing the year 1729 stands beside the road that passes through Bílé Poličany. It commemorates a year of plague in which many local families died. The date ties the monument to a specific year, while the commemoration draws attention to the consequences for families.
A prayer to Saint John of Nepomuk is engraved in the gable of a niche chapel: “G Jenne Nepomůcký patrone náš milý blaženče Český oroduj za náss.” The gable is the upper part of a building’s front; here it bears the wording of the dedication. A niche chapel in Bílé Poličany formerly housed a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.
There is a sundial on house no. 33: it is 1 meter tall and positioned 2.4 meters above the ground. The historical references have different points of reference: the plague column recalls a year of disaster and its consequences for local families. The inscription is dedicated to John of Nepomuk, while the 1949 episode is linked to the owner at the time and the broadcasting employees. This distinguishes local commemoration, religious devotion, and a specific period in the castle’s history.
