Čermná v Krkonoších extends along both sides of the Červený potok valley and lies at an average elevation of 450 metres. Specific themes for a stay include local history, the Church of St. Wenceslas, traditional log cabins and Cycling Route 4300. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether you are more interested in the village’s history, cycling or excursions in the surrounding area.

Local History and the Church of St. Wenceslas

Čermná was established in the 13th century, before the German colonisation began. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1362. At that time, Tyček of Ivanovice, the first known owner of the village, farmed here. These details trace the village’s origins to its first written mention and provide a timeframe for Čermná’s history.

The original Church of St. Wenceslas was built in 1384. The present church was completed in 1915, after the earlier church was demolished in 1913. The original church building and the completion of the present structure therefore represent two separate building phases. A Gothic Madonna and Child, discovered by chance in a local church, is dated to the late 14th or early 15th century.

Traditional architecture is also part of the village’s cultural and historical character: many log cabins have been preserved in Čermná. Two groups south of the stream are considered particularly noteworthy. For travellers interested in local history, the cabins offer another point of interest alongside the church, showcasing traditional rural building styles.

Cycling Route 4300 and Trip Planning

Cycling Route 4300 passes through Čermná; the village is at kilometre 6.00 of the route. The Komenského cesta trail also connects to Cycling Route 4300 and runs through Čermná to Vlčice. The route thus provides a specific option if you would like to include cycling in your stay.

Cycling Route 4300 is rated moderate to difficult and runs over asphalt, gravel and paved surfaces. Check the current route signs and the condition of the route before setting out. Particularly exposed or eroded sections may change, so the rating and the listed surfaces are useful planning information but do not replace checking the current conditions.

Excursions and Events

The area around Čermná is suitable for excursions in both winter and summer. This seasonal range may influence when you choose to travel; which season better suits your plans depends on your own interests.

The municipal programme for 2020 to 2024 listed an Advent concert and other events in the church. The programme also included the “Memoriál Františka Štočka” fire brigade competition as a local tradition. The Čermská pouť pilgrimage festival was also scheduled to take place in Čermná on 9 July 2022, with a full-day programme for children and adults; it was described as an annual event. Check current event dates if a concert, competition or festival is an important factor in planning your trip.

These events differ considerably in their timing requirements: a festival or concert calls for a suitable event date, while a cycling trip mainly requires checking the current route signs and conditions. You can therefore choose when to stay based on whether you are primarily interested in local history, a ride on the cycling route or a particular event date.
